The best Samsung Galaxy S23 screen protectors in 2023 | Digital Trends

Samsung’s Galaxy S24 may be just around the corner, but that doesn’t mean the Samsung Galaxy S23 isn’t still a great phone that’s worth protecting, especially its gorgeous AMOLED 2X edge-to-edge display.

Even though that screen is made from the latest Gorilla Glass, it’s still susceptible to scratches and scuffs, so unless you plan to use a folio case, we’d strongly recommend an extra layer of protection to keep your display looking pristine. That’s even more true if you’re the adventurous type, since even the most durable cases for your Galaxy S23 are only fighting half the battle.

The trickiest part of getting a screen protector for your Galaxy S23 is that the phone’s popularity means you have an embarrassment of options to pick from. This makes it challenging to find the right one for your needs. The best screen protectors should offer a high level of impact and scratch resistance without getting in the way of the vivid colors and deep blacks of the S23’s display while also being reasonably affordable and comfortable to use, as well as remaining smudge-free and easy to apply. We’ve rounded up some of the best picks available for the Galaxy S23 so you can ensure your new smartphone is protected from the start.

Spigen Neo Flex Solid Screen Protector – Twin Pack

Best overall Galaxy S23 screen protector

Pros

  • Good protection from a trusted name
  • Twin pack value
  • Wet installation method

The biggest boys in the playground have turned out for the Galaxy S23, and Spigen is one of the biggest around. The Neo Flex Solid is a film-based screen protector backed up by Spigen’s solid reputation, so you can be sure it’ll keep your smartphone protected against a number of threats.

Sure, it’s not going to be as protective as a glass protector, but the thin film is great for adding a slim layer of protection that doesn’t impair your screen’s clarity or touchscreen responsiveness. A wet installation method means it adheres closely to your device and stops it from lifting away during use. There are two protectors in the pack, and it’s compatible with the Galaxy S23’s fingerprint scanner and all of Spigen’s cases. It’s a very solid option, even if it’s more expensive for a film protector.

Ringke Privacy Tempered Glass Protector

Best privacy Galaxy S23 screen protector

Pros

  • Polarizing privacy shield
  • Tough tempered glass
  • Installation frame for easy fitting

Don’t want to give away any private or important details to any prying eyes? Then you need Ringke’s Privacy Tempered Glass screen protector. Tilt the phone to 40 degrees, and the screen fades to black, obscuring it entirely when viewed from an angle. Want to share something with a trusted friend? Turn your phone to landscape mode, and it’s visible as normal.

All of this is backed up by tough tempered glass which provides good protection against bumps, chips, drops, scratches, and pretty much anything. An anti-shatter film even stops shards of glass from hurting your fingers if it does break. It’s a good price, but keep in mind this only comes as a single pack. Thankfully, installation is easy with the included kit, so you shouldn’t need a replacement.

Otterbox Alpha Flex Antimicrobial Screen Protector

Best antimicrobial Galaxy S23 screen protector

Pros

  • Otterbox protection
  • Flexible and slim
  • Antimicrobial coating

Otterbox is the name in rugged cases, and it comes as no surprise that the Alpha Flex is an excellent screen protector. It’s a flexible protector, so it’s not glass, but it doesn’t skimp on protection, either.

Otterbox has used what it calls a “crystal coating” to provide strong resistance to scratches and other damage. It also comes with a special coating of silver ions, giving it antimicrobial properties. The adhesive attaches to the phone’s entire screen, rather than just the edges, giving it excellent adhesion. Otterbox claims it feels like glass, and it even helps to absorb the shocks from drops. That’s a heady boast, but since it’s Otterbox, it’s easier to believe. You’re paying a lot for Otterbox’s quality though, so keep that in mind.

Whitestone Dome Glass Screen Protector – Twin Pack

Best heavy-duty Galaxy S23 screen protector

Pros

  • Tempered glass protection
  • Liquid dispersal adhesive
  • Can seal existing cracks

Whitestone Dome is still a relative newcomer on the screen protection scene, but it made a real splash when it arrived, thanks to its unique attachment process. This protector uses a liquid glue that’s dispersed between the protector and the screen, creating a solid adhesive seal between the two when cured with the UV lamp.

This process can be fiddly and can take a while the first time through, but it means it won’t lift from the screen and doesn’t reduce clarity or responsiveness. Also, the glue will flow into any existing cracks or chips and will stop them from getting any worse. Everything you need is in the box, and while it’s expensive, you get two protectors as well as an excellent protector.

Amazon

Supershieldz Tempered Glass Screen Protector

Best fingerprint-free Galaxy S23 screen protector

Pros

  • 9H hardness tempered glass
  • 2.5D rounded edges for comfort
  • Hydrophobic and oleophobic coatings

Cons

  • Lacks front camera protection

Supershieldz is one of the most popular screen protector brands, which isn’t surprising as you’re getting pretty great value in this three-pack of tempered glass protectors. The Supershieldz glass is easy to install, but should you take it off, it removes without leaving any residue behind.

The 2.5D rounded edges provide a comfortable feel, which is an important touch with the edge-to-edge screen on the Galaxy S23, and the glass delivers 9H hardness to protect against scratches and drops with 99.99% HD clarity, so you’ll barely know it’s there. Plus, hydrophobic and oleophobic coatings also mean you won’t need to worry about smudging from sweat or fingerprints.

ArmorSuit MilitaryShield Screen Protector

Best self-repairing Galaxy S23 screen protector

Pros

  • Self-repairing technology eliminates scratches
  • Thin and clear material that won’t yellow
  • Includes complete installation kit

Cons

  • Doesn’t offer as much drop protection as tempered glass
  • Lacks front camera protection

As the name implies, ArmorSuit’s MilitaryShield is all about delivering the best protection possible. Since the Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the Galaxy S23 leaves it well-equipped to handle drops on some of the roughest surfaces, ArmorSuit has focused on providing excellent scratch protection in an ultra-thin and optically clear film.

However, the MilitaryShield doesn’t just prevent scratches from getting through to your screen; its self-repairing technology means minor scratches won’t remain in the film for long, either. Naturally, it’s also coated to resist dust, oil, and fingerprint smudges. All of this combines to ensure that your display will keep on looking great. It also includes everything you need to install it with minimal fuss.

Best simple Galaxy S23 screen protector

Pros

  • Easy to apply
  • Smudge-free
  • Tested to work with the fingerprint sensor

Cons

  • Polymer TPU film isn’t as tough as tempered glass

Case-Mate may be best known for its extensive lineup of smartphone cases, but it also offers screen protectors. The FlexiShield is a durable polymer film protector that provides shatter protection and scratch resistance without compromising on the sharpness of the Galaxy S23’s AMOLED display.

It won’t affect touch sensitivity, and it’s been specifically tested to work with Samsung’s ultrasonic under-display fingerprint sensor.

IQShield Matte Screen Protector

Best anti-glare Galaxy S23 screen protector

Pros

  • Reduces glare for better visibility in bright light
  • Anti-bubble film is easy to apply
  • Protects against scratches

Cons

  • Limited front camera protection
  • Not as tough as tempered glass protectors

The Galaxy S23 has one of the brightest displays you can get in a smartphone, designed to peak at up to 1,750 nits on a sunny day. However, that may not do you much good if there’s too much glare to see what’s on your screen. That’s where IQShield’s matte screen protector comes to the rescue, with an anti-glare design that will let you easily see your S23 on even the brightest days.

It doesn’t stop there; this durable military-grade film also protects against scratches, scrapes, and smudges, plus an anti-bubble design that makes it easy to install.

Pros

  • Great clarity and touch accuracy
  • Three-pack offers great value

Cons

  • Limited protection for the front camera

The Mr.Shield three-pack of tempered glass screen protectors offers impressive value, with 9H hardness ballistic Japan Glass for maximum strength against impacts and scratches. However, even with this level of toughness, the screen protector still delivers 99.99% HD clarity and a high degree of touch responsiveness.

2.5D rounded corners mean it won’t feel rough around the edges, and the oleophobic coating will prevent fingerprints from sticking around for long.

Best rugged Galaxy S23 screen protector

Pros

  • Offers protection for the rear camera lenses
  • Advanced 10H high alumina tempered glass
  • Includes alignment frame

Cons

  • Doesn’t protect the front camera

Even if you prefer to go without a case on your Galaxy S23, it’s still a good idea to make sure the cameras are protected. That’s even more true now that Samsung has redesigned the Galaxy S23 with three protruding lenses rather than a single camera bump.

Fortunately, iVoler’s tempered glass screen protector kit offers coverage for both sides. You get three tempered glass screen protectors for the front of your device, plus a set of “Night Circle” film that protects your lenses and reduces glare and lens flare. The package also includes an alignment frame that makes the front screen protector easier to install than ever.

The best Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra screen protectors in 2023 | Digital Trends

It may be nearly a year old, but Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra remains one of the most powerful smartphones on the market — and it’s still a great buy even with the Galaxy S24 Ultra on the horizon.

All the incredible power and performance packed into the S23 Ultra doesn’t come cheap, which means you’ll want to keep your investment protected from the get-go, especially considering that its gorgeous and expansive Dynamic AMOLED 2X 6.8-inch display seems like such an easy target for scratches and impacts. It may have amazingly durable Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the front, but that doesn’t make it impervious to damage, and it’s definitely not immune to scratches and scuffs.

Your screen is your portal into your S23 Ultra’s world, so keeping it safe and scratch-free is important. If you want to stop your display from accumulating dirt, scratches, and even — heaven forbid — cracks, a screen protector is a very good idea. Thankfully, there are a lot of great options, from thin and lightweight film covers to hardened tempered glass, and we’ve rounded up some of the best Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra screen protectors for you to consider.

Looking to finish your protection? Make sure to grab a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra case as well.

Bodyguardz ECO PRTX Screen Protector

Best advanced Galaxy S23 Ultra screen protector

Pros

  • Great protection
  • Impeccable eco credentials
  • Installation tray for easy install

Bodyguardz is always on the bleeding edge of screen protector technology, and the ECO PRTX is its most advanced protector yet. Made from synthetic glass, the ECO PRTX is one of the only glass screen protectors that’s guaranteed not to chip or crack at all, with the company also claiming it to be three times stronger than your device’s screen. Bodyguardz claims it feels just like your device’s glass, and won’t change your touch responsiveness at all. This is backed up by some amazing ecological credentials, including being the world’s first TUV Green Mark Product-certified screen protector. Even the installation tray is biodegradable, so you don’t have to worry at all about it hanging around for millions of years after you’re done with it.

What’s the downside? Well, it’s up there in a big red button: the price. It’s a lot for a single screen protector, even one that’s guaranteed not to break. But heck, if you can justify it (and you did just spend four figures on a smartphone, so good protection is a good idea), then its hard to get better than this.

Spigen Neo Flex Film Protector – Twin Pack

Best film Galaxy S23 Ultra screen protector

Pros

  • Good scratch protection
  • Wet installation for close fit
  • Oleophobic coating

Spigen is one of those big names it’s worth buying your entire protective suite from, as Spigen cases and screen protectors will work together flawlessly. This Neo Flex screen protector will pair well with a good slim case, as it adds a similar level of good protection, without adding additional thickness or reducing the usability of your device. It’s film, so it won’t offer as much strength as glass, but it makes up for that by offering good scratch protection and an oleophobic coating with a slimness that’s barely noticeable.

It’s a twin pack, so there’s a spare if something goes wrong, and the wet installation method means there’s less chance of it lifting away over time. There’s no install tray, though, which is a shame, as many protectors come with those useful tools these days.

InvisibleShield Fusion Curve XTR2 Eco

Best eco-friendly Galaxy S23 Ultra screen protector

Pros

  • Hybrid material protection
  • Anti-reflective coating
  • Blue light filter
  • Compatible with fingerprint scanner

It’s the crème de la crème of screen protectors and priced as such, but what better screen protector to protect your ultra-premium smartphone than an ultra-premium protector? InvisibleShield’s Fusion Curve XTR2 Eco may not exactly trip off the tongue, but it’s an exceptional piece of kit for protecting your smartphone’s screen. It’s made from a blend of materials, including Hexiom (a type of resin), to make a protector that’s neither glass nor film — but something in between. It’s strong but flexible, resists dust, cuts down on reflections and glare, and even has a built-in blue light filter. It also works with Samsung’s ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. It’s even made from recycled materials to add some ecological clout too.

The downside is obvious — it’s extremely expensive. As such, it’s hard to recommend for everyone. But if you’re worried about your S23 Ultra screen getting scratched or broken, it’s hard to get better than this.

Gadget Guard Screen Protector

Best super-strong Galaxy S23 Ultra screen protector

Pros

  • Claims to be five-times stronger than glass
  • Impact protection
  • Dedicated anti-fingerprint layer

There are screen protectors with all sorts of features, but few will gamble on pure, unadulterated strength. Gadget Guard has one of the few screen protectors that’s advertised purely on being strong. Just pure, honest strength. Gadget Guard claims its screen protector has five times the strength of normal tempered glass and has a seven-layer construction that might actually live up to those claims. Those layers include two dedicated protective layers that help disperse shock, plus another layer purely for fingerprint resistance.

It’s got nothing but strength behind it, but that’s hard to argue with when you’re looking at screen protection. It’s on the more expensive side for a single screen protector, though, making this something of a toss-up between expense and protection.

Whitestone Dome Glass Screen Protector — Twin Pack

Best rugged Galaxy S23 Ultra screen protector

Pros

  • Super-strong bond
  • Strong protection
  • Can stop existing damage from worsening

There’s no screen protector quite like Whitestone’s Dome Glass, and it’s the protector of choice for those who want to make sure their phone has an unbeatable bond between device and protector. The key is the installation process, which injects a layer of liquid adhesive between the phone and protector. That adhesive is cured with a UV lamp, creating a strong bond that doesn’t reduce responsiveness or clarity, and has the added bonus of filling in existing cracks or chips and stopping them from worsening. The glass protector is strong and resistant, and it should be protected against most hazards.

However, that process is also fairly long and fiddly, meaning there’s a lot more to this protector than just lowering it into place. You’ll need to make sure to put some time aside to sort this out. But once it’s done, it’s an almost unbeatable screen protector for the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

InvisibleShield Fusion VisionGuard Defense Curve

Best eye comfort Galaxy S23 Ultra screen protector

Pros

  • Protects from blue light
  • Antimicrobial coating
  • Claims to be unbreakable

Blue light from your beloved smartphone can do more than just light up your surroundings — it can also mess up your body clock and keep you awake longer than you intended. Setting up a software filter on your phone can help, but it tends to tint the screen orange, which doesn’t look great and can impact your enjoyment of movies and other content. Instead, why not buy a hardware solution? InvisibleShield’s VisionGuard range blocks 40% of blue light at 435-440nm, the toxic peak of blue light, helping cut down on your exposure dramatically. It’s also protective, with claims of being unbreakable, and is treated with an anti-microbial coating.

Like most of InvisibleShield’s products, this is certainly expensive — but if you care about your sleep hygiene as well as keeping your smartphone as safe as possible, then this is a good investment.

Skinomi MatteSkin Anti-glare Film Screen Protector — Twin Pack

Best anti-glare Galaxy S23 Ultra screen protector

Pros

  • Glare protection from strong lights
  • Self-healing and anti-yellowing treatment
  • Good thin protection

Cons

  • Glass would offer more protection

The Galaxy S23 Ultra gets very bright, but if you’re worried about strong lights obscuring your vision, or spending a lot of time outdoors, you can get a screen protector to help. Skinomi’s MatteSkin is a variant of its popular TechSkin film that offers a matte coating to help cut down on glare, making it easy to see your screen, even when under the strongest lights.

The thin film isn’t as protective as glass, but it’s thinner, cheaper, and still protects against scratches, dirt, and grime. It’s a good price too, and you get two in the pack, so you have a replacement if one gets dirty — or you have a mishap while applying it. It’s a good film option that’s great if you often find yourself squinting at phone screens.

Official Samsung Film Screen Protector — Twin Pack

Best official Galaxy S23 Ultra screen protector

Pros

  • Official Samsung product
  • Excellent clarity and sensitivity
  • Easy to install thanks to included tools

Cons

  • Film doesn’t offer the same protection as glass

Where else to go for your screen protection but the manufacturer of your new device? Samsung offers this double pack of screen protectors for the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, and it’s a great place to start. While not the cheapest option around, Samsung’s high quality is assured, and it comes in a dual pack, so you have a spare in case of installation woes.

Not that it’s difficult to install, though, thanks to the included installation tools. It’s tough and strong for a film and should ward off most scratches, dirt, and grease — though you’ll want a glass protector if you’re especially worried about drops and bumps. Film’s real advantage is it’s extremely clear and very thin, and Samsung’s own screen protectors provide that, and then some. A great choice.

Ringke Privacy Dual Easy Film Screen Protector

Best privacy Galaxy S23 Ultra screen protector

Pros

  • Ultra-thin
  • Privacy filter
  • Self-healing properties

Cons

  • Film isn’t as protective as glass
  • Reduces viewing angles

The Galaxy S23 Ultra’s big screen can display a lot, but the downside is it’s easily visible to people around, making things a bit awkward if you’re banking or doing anything with sensitive information. While there are things you can do to hide your data from prying eyes, screen protectors like this one from Ringke can help a lot.

It has a privacy filter, so your screen fades out to black when viewed from angles other than straight on. The film won’t protect very well against drops, but it’s lightweight and thin, and it’ll protect against dirt and scratches. The self-healing properties also mean it’ll heal small scratches, keeping your device looking newer for longer. The wing design folds around your device, protecting against it lifting away with use, and it’s easy to install as well. A great option if privacy is a concern, but keep in mind it will reduce viewing angles, making it harder to share videos or images with large groups of people.

Olixar Full Cover Tempered Glass Screen Protector

Best thin Galaxy S23 Ultra screen protector

Pros

  • Tough tempered glass
  • Transparent and thin
  • No risk of bubbles

It may seem odd to protect your phone by adding more glass to glass, but it really does work. By attaching itself to your phone screen, a glass screen protector can protect against scratches and dirt, and if a fall does happen, the protector will often absorb the destructive energies of the fall instead of your display, effectively making it a sacrificial guardian for your phone. Sure, the protector will crack, but that’s better than your phone cracking.

Olixar’s Full Cover is a great basic glass protector, being made of tempered 9H glass, and it has an anti-shatter film, so the glass won’t shard outwards if it does crack, making it safe to keep using even after a minor break. It’s thin, has a 95% light penetration ratio, and it’s easy to install too. And since it’s glass, it won’t bubble.

SuperShieldz High Definition Film Protectors — Twin Pack

Best value Galaxy S23 Ultra screen protector

Pros

  • Great price
  • Twin pack
  • Thin but protective

Cons

  • Other options could be more protective

Cheap but effective products have a value all their own, and that’s exactly what SuperShieldz is offering here. This twin pack of flexible TPU protectors will do well at protecting against dirt, dust, smudges, and scratches, even if it’s not likely to offer much protection against drops and falls. It’s super-thin, though, and has an excellent touch sensitivity that won’t impact touch accuracy or your ability to see your screen.

The fact it’s a twin pack means you have a replacement in case anything happens to your first protector, and it’s a bargain price, so you’re not breaking the bank either.

Armorsuit MilitaryShield Film Protector with Carbon Fiber Skin

Best complete Galaxy S23 Ultra screen protector

Pros

  • All-around protection
  • Thin and stylish
  • Free replacements

Cons

  • Not worth it if you have a case
  • Film protection is less than glass

A screen protector is often just one aspect of your protection, and we’d always recommend a protective case to really amp up your phone’s durability. But not everyone wants a case, and in those instances, a skin might be a fun addition to your phone. This screen protector from Armorsuit also comes with a black carbon fiber-style skin to attach to your new phone, and while it’s not particularly protective, it’ll protect against scratches and dirt in the same way a film screen protector would.

The protector is made from TPU, so it has self-healing qualities, as well as resistance to dirt and scratches. Like all film protectors, it won’t be as durable as glass, but it’s still a good option if you want something thin and unobtrusive. Armorsuit also offers free replacements, so if this protector peels off, gets damaged, or is installed badly, Armorsuit will send you another one, free of charge.

“The S23 has a clean design, a compact size that makes it comfortable to hold, a gorgeous display, a snappy processor, and reliable cameras. There’s a lot to like about this one.”

Pros

  • Sleek and compact design
  • Comfortable for one-handed use
  • Very fast performance
  • Reliable cameras take great photos
  • Long-lasting battery life
  • Five years of guaranteed updates

Cons

  • Base storage is still 128GB
  • Fast charging up to only 25W
  • Limited zoom quality past 10x

Since 2010, there has been a Samsung Galaxy S phone. It has become one of Samsung’s most popular products and one of the most prolific Android phones on the market. This year, we have the Galaxy S23 series, and the regular Galaxy S23 is the smallest and cheapest trio.

I’ve been a lifelong iPhone user, but the Galaxy S23 has become one of my favorite alternatives since I joined Digital Trends. It may be the smallest and cheapest of the S23 family, but honestly, there’s a lot to love here.

About our Samsung Galaxy S23 review

This review was written by Christine Romero-Chan after over two weeks of use in the U.S. Samsung provided a T-Mobile SIM card to use with the Galaxy S23. We provided an update in March after using the phone more from the initial review period. A second update was added in December 2023 after taking another look at the S23 after all the competing flagships had also been released.

Though many new flagship phones have come out since the S23 launched in February, the Galaxy S23 is still a very solid choice for anyone who values a compact smartphone that packs a punch.

One of the big advantages of the S23 is the size. It’s small, compact, and lightweight, making it perfectly pocketable and portable. Those who like to use smaller phones that are manageable with a single hand will like what the Galaxy S23 has to offer.

The Galaxy S23’s cameras also continue to be a strong point. Finding small, more affordable flagships with three main cameras is still difficult, but the S23 delivers. This means that you get the best bang for your buck in terms of camera specs because other brands typically don’t include a telephoto camera for the base models. On the S23, you get a main camera, an ultrawide camera, and a 3x telephoto camera. It’s a fantastic package and continues to be a really strong value.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy also still holds up very well. With typical day-to-day use and tasks, the S23 will have no issues keeping up with you. In fact, the optimized processor for Galaxy devices makes this small phone incredibly fast, and there’s zero lag or choppiness. And since the chip is optimized, you still get over a full day of use on a single charge since the device is fairly power efficient. At times, it even feels faster than my iPhone 15 Pro.

Though we expect the Samsung Galaxy S24 series in a few weeks, the S23 is still a great phone that we recommend, especially if you prefer smaller devices.

Samsung Galaxy S23: design

Unlike the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S22 before it, the Galaxy S23 has a refreshed design that is more akin to other modern smartphones, like the iPhone 14 Pro. It no longer has the camera island housing; instead, the cameras are now freely floating on the back. The bumps aren’t quite as big as seen on an iPhone, but it’s not completely flush. Still, it’s a sleek, clean design that should appeal to minimalists. It’s also the same design you’ll find on the Galaxy S23 Plus and Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Samsung uses Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on both the front and the back glass, and the glossy metal frame features Samsung’s Armor Aluminum. The S23 also has an IP68 rating, which means it’s fairly dust and water-resistant. If you tend not to use a case or screen protector on your phones, the S23 should be pretty durable. But if you don’t want to leave anything to chance, looking at a Galaxy S23 case or Galaxy S23 screen protector certainly won’t hurt.

The Galaxy S23 has a simple design with rounded corners and slightly curved edges, which reminds me of the old iPhone 11 design. However, the front display is flat with the frame, and the bezels are relatively thin compared to what I’m used to.

The buttons feel good, with a tactile click, and as part of Samsung’s efforts toward sustainability, are even made from recycled materials. Even the speaker grille is made with sustainable materials, and some recycled glass can be found in the Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The packaging and plastic screen cover are also eco-friendly.

My favorite part about the S23’s design is just how comfortable the size is and how lightweight it is. At just 5.93 ounces, it’s much lighter and easier to use than my iPhone 14 Pro that clocks in at 7.27 ounces (without my case and MagSafe PopSocket). That’s even more the case when compared to the S23 Ultra at 8.25 ounces. Thanks to the lightweight feel of the Galaxy S23, I found it comfortable to hold for long periods of time and even use comfortably with one hand — though this may be in part because of a case. Without a case, I found the matte glass on the back of the S23 to be a little slippery.

Samsung Galaxy S23: colors

Christine Romero-Chan / Digital Trends

The review unit I received is the Cream color, which is a creamy, off-white color. If you had the Phantom White S22, you’ll notice that the Cream definitely has a tad of beige to it, especially if you view them side by side together. I personally like the Cream color, as it’s a light neutral tone that will go with anything and makes some case designs pop more. For example, the Cream color really helps make the lavender flowers on my Coach case pop,  as seen in the photo above.

If you don’t like white shades, the other Galaxy S23 colors include Phantom Black, Lavender, and Green. If you buy an S23 directly from Samsung’s website, you can also choose from the exclusive Lime and Graphite options.

Joe Maring/Digital Trends

The Phantom Black is a good option if you want a dark neutral color that matches everything, and it’s definitely a pure black shade, versus Graphite, which is more of a dark gray, gunmetal-like hue. I honestly don’t really understand why Samsung made one of the exclusive colors so similar to one of the regular colors, and also in one of the more safe hues.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 in Graphite and Lime colors.
Samsung

At least the Lime color is a bright and refreshing yellow-green, like a freshly cut slice of a juicy lime. The regular Green color is more of a military, olive-like green shade that may not appeal to everyone. It reminds me a bit of the Midnight Green iPhone 11 Pro back in the day. However, depending on the lighting, the Green can shift and look more appealing at certain angles and lighting. Regardless, neither Lime nor Green are totally neutral colors, so they might be harder to match with a good case or even an outfit.

Lavender is like if Cream had a hint of pink (technically purple) to it. It’s very subtle, and it actually looks more like a pale pink than lavender. If you prefer something that has just a dash of color and a bit of femininity to it, then Lavender is the way to go.

Samsung Galaxy S23: screen

Christine Romero-Chan / Digital Trends

The Galaxy S23 has a 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display that features a Full HD+ resolution and a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. The resolution sits at 2340 x 1080 pixels, which means 425 pixels per inch (ppi). It should also be noted that the display on the S23 and the S23 Plus are both completely flat, unlike the S23 Ultra, which is curved near the edges. To me, the flat design is sleeker and more practical.

From the moment I turned the Galaxy S23 on, I was thoroughly impressed by the screen.

When you go outside in bright sunlight, the peak brightness is capped at 1,750 nits, which is the same as the S23 Plus and the S23 Ultra. It may not be as bright as Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro series (2,000 nits outdoors), but it’s still very usable on Southern California’s bright and sunny days. Though it’s been a bit gloomier lately than I’d like, I have no problem using the S23 outside in direct sunlight when Mother Nature allows it.

From the moment I turned the Galaxy S23 on, I was thoroughly impressed by the screen. It’s incredibly vibrant in its colors — the blacks are rich and deep, and text is sharp and crisp — just as you’d expect from a flagship phone. The 120Hz adaptive refresh rate also makes scrolling very smooth, though Android’s lack of elasticity compared to iOS will always be a bit jarring to me.

I do have to admit that because Samsung’s displays tend to be much more vibrant than other devices, it may make photos taken with the device appear overly saturated. However, when I view the photos I take with the S23 on a different device, like my iPhone 14 Pro or Pixel 7, they look a little toned down. This is a clear demonstration of how Samsung’s displays really make things “pop” on the screen (even a little too much sometimes).

Samsung Galaxy S23: performance and software

Christine Romero-Chan / Digital Trends

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 is powered by the latest and greatest chip from Qualcomm: the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. But this is not quite the same chip that you can find in other premium Android phones this year, like the OnePlus 11.

No — Samsung wants you to know that this is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy, which is a special version of the processor that is specifically optimized for Galaxy devices. What makes this one different? Samsung and Qualcomm worked together to make this particular version of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 have a faster CPU clock speed and more software efficiency for image processing. Enough of the mumbo jumbo — basically, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy makes the S23 superfast.

If you’re the kind of person who upgrades every few years, the S23 will last for a while.

The Galaxy S23 comes in either 128GB or 256GB storage options, and both feature 8GB RAM. It’s unfortunate that the S23 still starts out with only 128GB, while the S23 Plus and S23 Ultra start with 256GB, with the Ultra even going with 12GB RAM in the 512GB and 1TB options. Still, for most people, 128GB is decent, and 256GB should be plenty.

Screenshots of One UI 5.1 on Samsung Galaxy S23
Christine Romero-Chan / Digital Trends

Samsung has shipped the Galaxy S23 with Android 13 and its own custom One UI 5.1 layered over it. With the Galaxy S23 series, Samsung is promising four major Android version upgrades, as well as five years of regular security updates. That means that the S23 will last through Android 17, which is pretty impressive in itself, and it will get security patches for any vulnerabilities through 2028. If you’re the kind of person to upgrade every few years, the S23 will last for a while.

I’ve been using the phone for a few weeks now, and I have yet to encounter any frame rate lag or choppiness in my typical daily use. All the apps I need load up instantly once I open them, switching between apps is simultaneous, and capturing photos and videos is quick. Because of this, it is hard not to take a good picture with the Galaxy S23. And when viewing and editing those photos, rendering edits is just as fast as it is on my iPhone 14 Pro, without being overprocessed like with iOS.

Gaming performance is decent — if you are considering the base model S23, then you may only be playing quick games every now and then. In my testing of the device, I did play a bit of Diablo Immortal. My experience was mostly smooth, though I did notice a tiny bit of stutter and frame rate drops when there was a lot of action going on. And since this is just the regular Galaxy S23, I was unable to max out the graphical settings. But if you’re just looking to play some casual Match 3 games or the like, then the S23 should handle it without breaking a sweat.

Christine Romero-Chan / Digital Trends / Digital Trends

I must admit that while I prefer the stock Android experience that you get with Google Pixel phones, Samsung’s One UI is growing on me. It’s a little overwhelming at first, and there are some things that you should look into setting up before really diving into the phone. But once you get those things set up and familiarize yourself with them, then it really just becomes second nature.

One of the new features in One UI that I absolutely love is the fact that you can change the two lock screen shortcuts to anything you want. The interface for customizing the lock screen is similar, but much better than it is on iOS 16 — Apple needs to take a page from Samsung’s book here.

Samsung Galaxy S23: cameras

Christine Romero-Chan / Digital Trends

Despite being the base model of the lineup, the Galaxy S23 comes equipped with a triple-lens camera system. You get a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilization (OIS) and f/1.8 aperture, a 12MP ultrawide camera with f/2.2 aperture, and a 10MP telephoto camera with OIS and f/2.4 aperture lenses. The selfie camera is a decent 12MP sensor with dual-pixel autofocus and f/2.2 aperture.

Of course, the main spotlight this year went to the S23 Ultra with its 200MP main camera sensor. Though Samsung should have put the old 108MP camera from the S22 Ultra into the S23 and S23 Plus, the S23 still takes some pretty great photos, all things considered.

I put the camera to the test a few times by trying to capture my 15-month-old toddler’s antics at the park in front of my house. Thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, an image is captured fairly quickly once you press the shutter button, and the result is detailed images that are vibrant and punchy in color. I also took the S23 with me to Disneyland, which resulted in sharp, crisp images that are bright and pleasing to look at.

I did feel that sometimes the colors don’t seem 100% accurate to what you see in real life, but that is also due to Samsung’s display, which tends to lean on the brighter, more saturated side. Some photos I took with both my iPhone 14 Pro and the S23, and the iPhone’s images were more realistic and true to life in terms of color. But after taking a look at the S23 pictures on a different display, like the iPhone 14 Pro through Google Photos, the vibrancy and brightness is toned down a tiny bit, making it closer to what you see in reality.

I love to take portrait mode photos whenever I can, and I feel that the Galaxy S23 handles edge detection with portraits better than my iPhone 14 Pro. The Portrait mode images I snapped with the S23 all look great, including selfies, and I slightly prefer the bokeh effect that the Galaxy S23 produces — even on regular photos with the main camera. Night mode photos are also pretty good, as the S23 does a great job of brightening things up when you need it to (though some of the finer details are lost in the noise once you zoom in).

The telephoto lens on the Galaxy S23 can do 3x optical zoom and up to 30x digital zoom. I was excited to try out the 30x zoom feature, but 10x is essentially the limit for getting decent photos. The 20x and 30x photos I took looked like really bad watercolor paintings, for the most part. Some images, like the Disney 100 Years of Wonder sign above Disney California Adventure and a passenger cabin on the Pixar Pal-A-Round, appear passable. But zooming in on a Disney duck at 30x? Yeah, it doesn’t look good. If you want good-looking zoom images (at least up to 30X), then without a doubt, the Galaxy S23 Ultra is the better option.

The selfie camera is also quite good in decent lighting. Selfies I captured appeared mostly true to life, and skin tones don’t appear washed-out. I did notice that sometimes the selfie camera made my lips appear bright and unnaturally orange, but that may have something to do with the lighting, as it doesn’t happen all the time. By default, there is some skin smoothing going on, and you can choose whether skin tone appears natural or warmer, but these can be adjusted to your liking.

It’s hard to capture a bad photo with the Galaxy S23.

In my initial testing phase, I did not take any ultrawide photos — I typically don’t find myself in situations where the ultrawide camera would yield the kind of results I want. However, this may change in the coming weeks as I use the phone more for camera comparisons.

Overall, the Galaxy S23 cameras take great photos for the average person. They’re detailed, vibrant, and punchy, which is definitely appealing. Just keep in mind that the colors may be a little over the top because of the display, but shouldn’t be so outlandish when viewed on other devices. The zoom capabilities are decent up to 10X, but using anything higher than that will depend on what you’re trying to capture. But with the main and selfie cameras, it’s hard to capture a bad photo.

Samsung Galaxy S23: battery and charging

Christine Romero-Chan / Digital Trends

The Samsung Galaxy S23 has a 3,900mAh battery, which is slightly bigger than the 3,700mAh that came in its predecessor. You’ll find a USB-C to USB-C charging cable in the box, but Samsung has opted not to provide a charging adapter, so you’ll need to use one you already have or buy a new one. While the S23 Plus and S23 Ultra support up to 45-watt fast charging, the base S23 only has up to 25W fast-charging speeds, so you’ll get 50% charge in 30 minutes.

In my week with the Galaxy S23, I’m getting around two full days of use from a single charge. Keep in mind that the S23 is not my primary device (that’s my iPhone 14 Pro), so I am not constantly sending SMS messages and making phone calls with the S23. However, I have been using it constantly for checking social media, including Mastodon, Instagram, and Facebook. I use it for my personal Gmail and work email (Outlook), as well as Microsoft Teams, and I’m making the most out of the camera whenever I can. I occasionally play some games with it and watch videos as well.

Battery levels on Samsung Galaxy S23
Christine Romero-Chan / Digital Trends

Samsung has the Galaxy S23 listed to last around 22 hours with normal use, which seems about right. If you only have one phone and use the S23 for all of your messages, calls, and everything else, then it should last most of the day before you need to get it on the charger. But if you’re always carrying a portable battery pack or charger anyway, then these numbers don’t really matter.

Wireless charging is capped out at 15W speeds, and you get 4.5W reverse wireless charging. I haven’t used the reverse wireless charging yet myself, but it’s good to have the option in a pinch.

Samsung Galaxy S23: price and availability

Christine Romero-Chan / Digital Trends

The Samsung Galaxy S23 is available now. The 128GB base model costs $800, and if you need more space, the 256GB version is just $60 more. The S23 comes in four colors: Phantom Black, Cream, Lavender, and Green. If you purchase direct from Samsung, you can also pick from the exclusive Graphite or Lime colors.

Aside from Samsung directly, you can find the S23 pretty much anywhere. You should find one available at your carrier store, Amazon, Best Buy, and other big-name retailers. Just keep in mind that if you want the Graphite or Lime color options, you can only get those by purchasing from Samsung’s website.

Samsung Galaxy S23: verdict

Christine Romero-Chan / Digital Trends

I personally have been enjoying the Samsung Galaxy S23 quite a lot. For $800, you get a phone that has a sleek and compact design that feels excellent to hold and use one-handed. The display is sharp and beautiful, with vibrant colors and rich blacks. Performance is fast and the cameras are reliable.

Plus, the S23 will get major software upgrades for the next four years, and with five years of regular security updates, this phone has longevity. And even though it’s the smallest battery of the S23 lineup, I still found it to be pretty long-lasting, though I wish the charging speed could be faster like its siblings.

The back of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, showing its green color.
Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

Those who like smaller, compact phones will like the S23. But if you need a larger screen, there’s the Galaxy S23 Plus with a 6.6-inch screen for $200 more. It has pretty much the same specs as the regular S23 but with faster charging. But is that worth the $999 price tag? For a lot of people, probably not. At that point, for $1.200, you could get the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which has the superior 200MP main camera, the largest display, most RAM and storage, and S Pen integration.

Another good flagship option to consider is the OnePlus 11, which is equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, a 50MP main camera, and a 6.7-inch AMOLED display, and has long-lasting battery life and even faster charging speeds of up to 80W — all for just $700. However, as stated in our review, it lacks wireless charging capabilities, and the portrait mode camera is a little disappointing. Plus, accessories like cases and screen protectors are hard to come by!

There is also the Google Pixel 7, which is normally just $599, so you could save a little bit of money. It comes equipped with a 6.3-inch OLED display, 8GB RAM with either 128GB or 256GB storage, and a 50MP main camera. However, it lacks a telephoto camera, though you can find that on the Pixel 7 Pro, starting at $899.

Those who are in the market for a new Android phone but don’t need something as advanced as the Galaxy S23 Ultra should really consider picking up the regular S23. I feel like it’s a perfect size, and it’s fast and snappy. I’m not sure if it’s worth getting if you still have an S22, though, as the upgrades are pretty iterative and minor. But for everyone else? It’s a fantastic buy.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra review: the best Android phone yet | Digital Trends

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

MSRP $1,199.00

“The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is the most complete, most versatile Android smartphone you can buy. It’s a big purchase in more ways than one, but it’ll last you for years.”

Pros

  • Incredibly powerful processor
  • Versatile telephoto zoom camera
  • S Pen adds value
  • Water-resistant and durable
  • Long software update commitment
  • Many interesting features to explore
  • Large, bright, detailed screen

Cons

  • Wired charging is complicated, and only 45W
  • Big and heavy

Before reading this review, there are a few things I want to suggest. Don’t get caught up in the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra’s admittedly high price tag; instead, think about the value it represents. Don’t get overwhelmed by its astonishing ability or extensive feature list, but consider the things it can’t do. Don’t think of it as “more of the same” compared to the Galaxy S22 Ultra either, as you’ll miss the things that mean it’ll stay usable longer.

I know that’s a lot of “don’ts,” but there’s a reason I’ve pointed them out. It’s because the Galaxy S23 Ultra can do pretty much everything you want today, next year, and almost certainly for a few years after that, too. When you know this, it’s only the things it can’t do that will matter — and believe me, it’s a very short list indeed. Join us as we go into detail in our full Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra review.

About our Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra review

Our Galaxy S23 Ultra review is based on many weeks of regular use since the phone was released. We tested three different models throughout that time. First, one review model supplied by Samsung in the U.K. was used by Andy Boxall, which was subsequently returned and replaced with a retail version purchased from Samsung’s online store. The other is being used in the U.S. by Joe Maring. All three are unlocked versions of the phone.

I (Andy Boxall) revisited the Galaxy S23 Ultra at the end of November 2023 and updated our review accordingly, plus added a new section right below covering how it operates today. The score remains the same, and it’s still a recommended buy. We’re also still using the S23 Ultra regularly.

The thing that struck me most about the Galaxy S23 Ultra in November 2023 is that it doesn’t seem to have aged at all. If you told me it was released yesterday, I’d believe you and would give it the same breathless review as I did in February. The prompt update to Android 14 and One UI 6 definitely helps, as does the fact the S Pen and the brilliant, fun 10x optical zoom continue to be unique in the market.

Over the past months, we’ve shown how the camera can take incredible photos in the right hands and how much difference there is between it and a $450 phone like the Samsung Galaxy A54. Returning to it only emphasized that it has lost none of its camera magic, not even when compared to the latest Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max. The camera isn’t perfect, but it’s so versatile and capable in most environments you’ll quickly forgive it should it get something wrong.

Samsung will replace the Galaxy S23 Ultra in early 2024 with the Galaxy S24 Ultra. This inevitable change may make you stop and think if the S23 Ultra is worth buying today, and although we’d say if you can wait, it’s probably worth it, there’s no reason to dismiss the S23 Ultra if you aren’t bothered about having the latest model. It’s excellent all round, and you won’t regret buying it today.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: design

Someone holding the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.
Joe Maring/Digital Trends

I came to the Galaxy S23 Ultra from the OnePlus 11 and spent the first few days adapting to the difference between the two. The OnePlus 11 is slim, light, and very “holdable,” and the S23 Ultra really isn’t any of those things. If you’re coming from a phone that isn’t nearly 9mm thick, 78mm wide, and 233 grams in weight, you’re really going to notice how much of a handful the S23 Ultra is.

It’s not unmanageable, but there is a period of adjustment involved unless you’re already using the Galaxy S22 Ultra or an iPhone 14 Pro Max, which are the closest analogs to the S23 Ultra’s size.

You will get used to the S23 Ultra’s size and weight, but if you’ve got small hands, the width and thickness make singlehanded use very difficult, which is far harder to overcome. It’s a consideration that’s mostly unnecessary on phones like the OnePlus 11, iPhone 15 Pro, or even the Galaxy S23 Plus. If this is going to be your first massive smartphone, before you buy it, go and hold one first and see if you think it’ll fit into your lifestyle. Some folks may never adjust to the S23 Ultra’s size, and for them, the much smaller and more pocketable Galaxy S23 will be a better fit.

Samsung hasn’t really changed the design of the Galaxy S23 Ultra over the S22 Ultra. It’s still that familiar all-business look, with curved sides to the chassis and the screen, tiny bezels, and five circular camera modules on the back. It’s not especially eye-catching, but this will be part of its appeal. There’s a maturity to the simple stylishness of the S23 Ultra, and the device itself is instantly recognizable too. It’s not going to be mistaken for an iPhone 15 Pro Max or a Google Pixel 8 Pro.

A person holding the Galaxy S23 Ultra and taking a photograph.
Andy Boxall/DigitalTrends

The build quality is superb, it’s incredibly substantial, and it should be very durable too. The S23 Ultra has an IP68 water-resistance rating, Gorilla Glass Victus 2, and Samsung’s latest Armor Aluminum chassis material. The weight means putting it in a case will protect it in the event of a fall onto something hard, but there’s a degree of reassurance that comes from Samsung’s commitment to durability that’s missing from many of its competitors.

This also applies to Samsung’s use of recycled materials, and its lengthy software update commitment, which, when combined with the durability and performance of the phone, adds up to it being a device you’ll be happy to keep for years. It used to be fine to keep a phone for two years if you were keen on mobile tech, but this is a three-or-more-year device.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: colors

Andrew Martonik / Digital Trends

There are eight different color options for the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The standard Phantom Black, Lavender, Cream, and Green models are widely available, but if you order directly from Samsung you can choose one of four exclusive colors. These are Lime, Graphite, Red, and Sky Blue. If you do opt for one of the Samsung-only colors, you may have to wait a little longer for delivery.

We started off using the green Galaxy S23 Ultra, and it’s certainly attractive. Green is an on-trend color for smartphones, with everything from the iPhone 13 Pro to the OnePlus 11 tackling the tricky shade. Samsung didn’t go for a bright or forest green, toning it down for a subtle look when it wasn’t in the right light. It stood out a little more when the light did hit it, but it’s hardly an attention grabber.

Step forward with Samsung’s exclusive colors. These really will grab attention, as they’re far brighter and more eye-catching. I chose the Sky Blue model, which took a week longer to ship than a standard colored model, and am very pleased with my choice.

I considered the red model but preferred the Sky Blue model’s chrome finish on the chassis to the red version’s black finish. The blue is still quite subtle, taking on a paler, almost silver color at certain angles. If you can handle the long wait, you won’t be disappointed with one of Samsung’s exclusive colors.

It’s joined by a far more conventional 12MP wide-angle camera with a 120-degree field of view, plus a pair of 10MP telephoto cameras for a 3x and 10x optical zoom. The camera is also equipped with optical image stabilization (OIS) and laser autofocus, plus a Super Resolution Zoom with recommended levels of 30x and 100x digital zoom.

It’s possible to shoot photos at the full 200MP resolution; just be aware that these take up at least 40MB of space on their own, compared to the more usual 4MB to 7MB 12MP shots the camera takes by default.

Here’s the most important thing you need to know about the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s camera: the reason to buy it is not the 200MP camera, but its incredible zoom capabilities. They are transformative and make the camera so much more versatile than what’s on any other phone available today. The quality of the 3x and 10x zoom is excellent, but now the 30x zoom is catching up. And although the 100x still isn’t great, it’s much better than ever before. The Galaxy S23 Ultra’s telephoto cameras take photos that are impossible to replicate on any other smartphone, at least with the same quality. You’ll have a lot of fun taking amazing zoom photos with the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

The main camera takes brilliant photos, but you won’t really know it’s a 200MP camera. Shots have a vibrant, exciting tone, with strong colors and masses of detail. I like the overall atmosphere the camera creates, which straddles the line between realism and hyperrealism very effectively. Most of the time, the colors are amped up by just the right amount, but it can slip into oversaturation when faced with reds and blues in some situations.

It takes considerably brighter photos than the iPhone 14 Pro and exposes more detail in the shadows too, but this comes at the expense of a natural color palette. The camera also produces shots with a very different atmosphere. I’d call them more instantly shareable, but that won’t be deemed a good thing by everyone. Comparing the Galaxy S23 Ultra camera to the Google Pixel 7 Pro, one of our favorite camera phones, was a real eye-opener; the Galaxy S23 Ultra has stolen the Google phone’s crown. It also tied with the much newer Apple iPhone 15 Pro’s camera in this test, showing it hasn’t lost any of its ability since launch.

You can also download Samsung’s Expert RAW app from the Galaxy App Store, which unlocks the camera’s potential to take professional-level images in RAW format that are ready to be edited in apps such as Adobe Lightroom. Lightroom is the default editor for the app, but it requires a subscription to use all of its features. Pay through the app, and Lightroom Premium costs $5 per month, and it comes with an extended two-month free trial.

I wasn’t convinced it would be worth it, or that you wouldn’t need a lot of expertise to use it effectively, but I was wrong. The Lightroom for Samsung app adds a great deal to the overall camera experience, and retains that all-important hands-on approach to editing images that’s disappearing due to the use of AI. I’m definitely not an expert with Lightroom, but the easy tutorials have given me enough confidence to adjust my photos so they look better to my eyes.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra’s versatility makes it really desirable, and I feel confident I will be able to take any photo I want with it — and that’s something other phones can’t quite provide. It’s also still the only phone you can buy with a 10x optical zoom, and even when other phones get close to that figure, the quality is often lacking in comparison. It’s a superb camera phone.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: video recording

Andy Boxall/Digital Trends

I continue to adore the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s camera for stills; it’s so incredibly versatile that I rarely feel it can’t capture the shot I want. But what about the video performance? The Galaxy S23 Ultra can record video at up to 8K resolution at 24 frames-per-second (fps), or at a more reasonable 4K at 60fps. It also has many special modes, including slow-motion, Hyperlapse, and Portrait video.

You’ll have to be mindful of storage space shooting at higher resolutions. A minute of 8K video takes up about 620MB, while 4K resolution fills almost the same amount of space at 550MB on average. If you do this regularly, and start shooting 200MP stills, too, then it’s easy to see how quickly 256GB of storage space would be filled. It’s worth considering the 512GB version or even more if you want to take a lot of video.

But what does the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s video actually look like? To find out, I took the phone with me on a short trip away and made a point to shoot as much video as possible, instead of mostly taking still photos as usual. You can read my complete article on what it’s like to use the S23 Ultra as a video camera, with several examples of performance — plus you can see one of the videos from it above. I really enjoyed using the S23 Ultra’s video mode, as it repeats all the still camera modes, giving you a lot of versatility. It can’t beat stills for me, personally, but there’s no question it’s just as powerful if you prefer it.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: performance

Playing a game on the Galaxy S23 Ultra.
Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

Powerful isn’t a strong enough word to describe the incredible ability of the Galaxy S23 Ultra. We’d already been impressed by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the Iqoo 11 and the OnePlus 11, but here — in its custom “Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 For Galaxy” guise — it’s an absolute monster. I’d love to say I have pushed the phone to its limits, but I don’t think I’ve come close. I play games, use apps, make calls, use Bluetooth and Samsung DeX, take 200-megapixel photos, and shoot some 8K video. Even with all of that, the S23 Ultra just shrugs it all off.

Playing Asphalt 9: Legends for 30 minutes doesn’t cause any noticeable temperature increase apart from a tiny bit around the top edge, but nothing that you’d call hot, or even that warm. Recording a 15-minute Hyperlapse video caused the phone to heat up more around the camera module –not so it was burning, but definitely hot to the touch. Apps start and refresh in seconds, and even Google Maps grabs a signal and loads the local area faster than other phones I’ve used. When you start noticing little things like that, it means the entire system is incredibly smooth and fast.

Powerful isn’t a strong enough word to describe the incredible ability of the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

My review model has 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage space. There is an 8GB version available, but it’s probably worth getting the higher specification one if you’re planning to keep the phone for a while. Internal storage is also an important consideration. A single 200MP photo is at least 40MB, and a minute of 8K video is often close to 600MB. That’s before you’ve installed any games, and some of the top games today can take up to 10GB alone. Do think about the 512GB model if you intend to keep it for a while.

This time, Samsung hasn’t made an Exynos version of the Galaxy S23 Ultra for global markets. I’m extremely glad, as I can’t see any way the almost overwhelming ability of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 For Galaxy could be beaten. Buy the Galaxy S23 Ultra, and be safe in the knowledge you’ll have to work pretty hard to reach its limits.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: screen and software

Andy Boxall/DigitalTrends

That’s 6.8 inches of Super Dynamic AMOLED screen you’re looking at on the front of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, and it’s even bigger than the massive iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pixel 7 Pro. It’s enormous, and has the brightness to go with its size. Peak brightness is 1,750 nits, and even walking around Manhattan on a (surprisingly) sunny February morning, Section Editor Joe Maring could still see the screen perfectly. I’ve had no problem seeing the screen, either. It’s easily comparable to the iPhone 14 Pro’s similarly bright display.

Watching Disney+ and Amazon Prime, the screen’s vibrant colors and deep blacks are immediately obvious, and the sheer size of the screen makes it more immersive than you’d expect from a mobile device. I love the wide viewing angle too, so even when the phone is flat on a desk, video still looks excellent and just like you’re watching it straight-on.

Andy Boxall/DigitalTrends

Star Wars: The Clone Wars looks amazing, with tons of detail on show. The audio is great too, with centralized dialogue and expansive music, plus a pleasing amount of depth. When playing games, though, your palm does tend to cover the lower speaker unless you hold the phone “upside down” when the buttons get in the way and are less natural to press.

Android 13 with Samsung’s One UI 5.1 software was installed when the phone launched, but it has since been upgraded to Android 14 and One UI 6. We’ve got a review of the latest software here. I find it takes time to get the best from One UI as it’s quite feature-dense, and you really have to work to find many of the best or most helpful ones. For example, did you know you can change the lock screen clock, notification layout, and add filters to the wallpaper? To find these capabilities, you have to tap and hold the screen when the phone is locked, rather than it being an option when the phone is unlocked.

Screenshots taken from the Galaxy S23 Ultra showing various functions and software features.
Andy Boxall/DigitalTrends

None of the additional features are pushed at you, though, so it never feels overwhelming, and you don’t get the impression you’re underutilizing the device. As you explore and find new features, the good news is they mostly work very well and are rarely gimmicky. Samsung’s DeX system is a good example, as the phone can be connected to a monitor or PC to provide a big-screen PC-like experience. I wouldn’t use it very often, but it’s very effective when it is called into action.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra’s software features work very well and are rarely gimmicky.

Samsung provides one of the longest commitments to software updates in the industry, with four years of major OS updates and five years of security updates too. It’s another crucial aspect of the device’s longevity, and a reason to buy and keep using your phone for years to come. However, Google has gone one step further with the update commitment for the Google Pixel 8 series, which will receive new software until 2030.

I always make a core set of adjustments in One UI when I set it up, and once they’re done, the software looks and works just as I like. I’d put it up against Android on the Pixel 7 in terms of speed, and although it’s not quite as simple to use as Google’s version, it’s more intuitive and fun than OxygenOS 13 on the OnePlus 11. It’s reliable, attractively designed, consistent in its look, and almost always logical to use.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: S Pen Stylus

Andy Boxall / DigitalTrends

The Galaxy Note series has been retired, and the top S Series phone has taken its place; hence you’ll find the S Pen stylus hidden in a slot on the bottom of the phone — another reason this is a big smartphone. It’s securely held in place, and the tiny internal battery powering the Bluetooth is charged while it’s docked, ensuring it’s always ready to go. the pen is thin and relatively short, but I find it comfortable to hold and scribble notes. I’m no artist, though, and the stubby length may not be comfortable enough to craft any masterpieces.

It’s as multifunctional as you could expect from a stylus, providing ways to clip images and text, translate text, take notes, sketch, and even make use of it as a remote shutter button for the phone’s camera. There’s no question it’s well-engineered and is more versatile than a passive stylus, but whether you use it regularly or not depends on your eagerness to take handwritten notes or sketch on your phone.

I don’t find many opportunities to use the primary features very often, but I do like one feature a lot. When you remove the pen while the phone is locked, you can scribble endless notes on the black screen. Press the side button to erase a word, and tap Save to store the note in Samsung Notes. It’s incredibly responsive, very fast, and the palm rejection is spot-on. Jotting things down on your phone like this is seamless and really fast.

It’s not just lock-screen notes that are fast — it’s the whole thing. Use the instant translation feature by hovering the S Pen over the top of the text you want to translate, and in less than a few seconds, it appears in a pop-up box. If you use it on Twitter, it’s faster than the platform’s own translation system. The S Pen is not a reason to buy the Galaxy S23 Ultra on its own, but it is a great piece of added value. You may not use it all the time, but when you do, its speed and precision are outstanding.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: battery and charging

The Galaxy S23 Ultra's charging port.
Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

The Galaxy S23 Ultra does not come with a charger in the box but does come with a USB Type-C-to-Type-C cable. The phone supports Samsung’s fastest 45-watt charging technology, which requires either a Samsung Super Fast Charging 2.0 charger or a compatible charger from another brand that supports both it and the USB Power Delivery PPS standard. It makes charging the Galaxy S23 Ultra at its fastest speeds a little confusing if you’re a newcomer, so you want to make sure you choose the right charger when going to buy one.

Obviously, Samsung wants you to buy its own charger, which costs around $30, but others are available if you search. I’ve used the Anker 313 GaN charger, which is compatible with both Power Delivery PPS and Super Fast Charging 2.0, and it charged the phone in 63 minutes. It’s not as fast as the OnePlus 11, but very few phones are, and an hour is acceptable for a battery of this capacity.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra’s battery is more than capable to keep you going.

I’d like it to be a little simpler to work out which chargers and cables will be compatible. If you charge it using a charger that’s not compatible with Samsung’s technology, it’s a lot slower. A regular charger takes around 100 minutes to fully charge the battery, and that’s not great. I do like the way it shows the estimated charge time on the lock screen, helping you plan ahead, and it also tells you what kind of charging system is being used. For example, it does state if Super Fast Charging 2.0 is active.

Battery usage page on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.
Joe Maring / Digital Trends

Once it is fully charged, it’s capable of lasting for more than two days with moderate use, and a lot of its ability comes from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2’s increased efficiency. Watching a 30-minute YouTube video drains the battery by just 2%. Roughly the same time using GPS drains a similar amount of energy too.

Even on more intensive days, the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s battery is more than capable to keep you going. On a day with over an hour of playing Marvel Snap and browsing Twitter, then watching YouTube videos for 45 minutes, plus regular use of Google Chrome, Reddit, Duolingo, and more, the S23 Ultra ended a nearly 16-hour day with 5 hours and 20 minutes of screen-on time and 24% battery still remaining.

Add in 15W wireless charging and reverse charging for accessories like the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro, and the Galaxy S23 Ultra is very nearly the complete package when it comes to charging and battery life.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: price and availability

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

The cheapest Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is $1,199 and comes with 256GB of storage space. If you want 512GB of storage space, the phone will cost $1,379, while the most expensive 1TB model costs $1,699. It comes in Green, Cream, Lavender, or Phantom Black colors, but if you order from Samsung, there’s an additional choice of Red, Lime, Graphite, or Sky Blue colors.

In the U.K., the same colors are available, and the 256GB Galaxy S23 Ultra costs 1,249 British pounds. It’s 1,399 pounds for the 512GB version and 1,599 for the top 1TB model. You can buy the Galaxy S23 Ultra directly from Samsung’s website, at retailers like Amazon and Best Buy, or from your favorite wireless carrier.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra next to the Google Pixel 7 Pro.
Joe Maring/Digital Trends

This is an expensive smartphone, especially if you choose the 1TB model. The price puts it in competition with the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max and Samsung’s own Galaxy Z Fold 5. If you simply can’t justify spending so much, take a look at the Galaxy S23 Plus, which has a large screen and the same processor, or the OnePlus 11. OnePlus’ latest phone has the same processor and battery capacity, plus the camera and screen are both excellent. It’s a very good value at $699. The $999 Google Pixel 8 Pro is another good choice if you want to spend less and prioritize camera performance over device performance and battery life. And if you’re OK sacrificing some screen size and battery, the regular Galaxy S23 is a phenomenal choice.

Before spending less, though, do consider the longevity of the device and how long you see yourself keeping it. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is so powerful and has such a versatile camera, mega battery life, impressive durability, and long-term software support that it will likely outlast many other devices, purely because of its outright ability. If you want to spend once and keep your new device for years and years, the Galaxy S23 Ultra may be the better bet over the long term.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: verdict

The Galaxy S23 Ultra sitting on a table and showing its home screen.
Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

What can’t the Galaxy S23 Ultra do? It’s not quite as fast to charge as the OnePlus 11, and it’s not going to fit comfortably in all hands or pockets — but that’s about it. There’s a real pleasure in using a phone that puts ability ahead of gimmicks and keeps a sensible, yet stylish and recognizable design over needlessly changing it up to try and attract buyers. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is Samsung at its most confident, and it’s the sensible, mature buying decision for anyone wanting the pinnacle of Android performance and ability. It’s a combination that makes it one of the best phones of the year.

What it’s not is daring, or especially forward-thinking. Head over to the Galaxy Z Fold 5 for that, as the Galaxy S23 Ultra gives you the best that’s available now, without compromise, and doesn’t try to push the envelope or be the next big thing. It’s the current big thing, and because it’s not advancing the fundamentals over what we’re used to seeing already, it’ll stay relevant and usable for more people over many years.

Only the iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max come close to being this confidence-inspiring, as other top-tier Android phones are often thwarted by software woes, performance that’s good but never outstanding, and try-hard designs that can limit appeal. You’re going to pay a lot of money for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, but it’s worth every penny, and in three or even four years’ time, when it’s still a great phone, you’ll look back and see what good value it actually was.

Add in the same AMOLED 2X screen and powerful cameras, and it’s right in the sweet spot among some of the best Android phones in 2023.

Nevertheless, while the Galaxy S23 Plus may not be the priciest flagship on the market, it’s still an expensive smartphone that you’ll want to take care of. ESR Classic Kickstand Case

The best kickstand Galaxy S23 Plus case

Pros

  • Discreet kickstand doubles as camera protector
  • Military-grade drop protection
  • Versatile stand adjustment

Cons

  • Smooth sides aren’t particularly grippy

ESR’s Classic Kickstand case takes a unique and minimalist approach to propping up your Galaxy S23 Plus. Instead of adding a bulky bump in the middle of the case, the kickstand here fits into the camera cutout, where it does double-duty to protect your camera lenses when it’s not being used as a stand.

The stand and hinge mechanism are also impressively durable, as it’s constructed using a zinc alloy frame and hinge mechanism, so you won’t need to worry about it breaking off or wearing out over time. The case is made just as well as the hinge, with Air-Guard corners and raised edges that offer military-grade drop protection, plus a scratch-resistant frosted acrylic back.

The Galaxy S23 lineup makes it easier than ever to leave your wallet behind thanks to Samsung Wallet, but we still haven’t quite reached the point where can ditch all your cards entirely. That’s where Spigen’s Slim Armor CS comes in.

Unlike folio cases that make it awkward to use your phone, the Slim Armor CS is a traditional protective case that keeps your Galaxy S23 Plus easily accessible while still offering room for two cards in a compartment on the back. Spigen doesn’t skimp on protection here; as the name implies, the Slim Armor CS includes air cushion technology and raised edges around the screen and camera to protect your device from the everyday bumps and drops of life.

Samsung Leather Case

The best leather Galaxy S23 Plus case

Pros

  • Available in complementary colors
  • Precise camera cutouts
  • Slim and stylish

It’s probably no surprise that Samsung’s own leather case fits your Galaxy S23 Plus like a glove, but it’s also elegantly designed to complement the phone’s design. It’s available in three colors that either match or complement the colors of the Galaxy S23 Plus, and it features precise cutouts for each of the protruding camera lenses to both protect them and make them look perfectly flush with the back.

The premium leather not only feels comfortable in the hand, but it helps you keep a good grip on your phone, and raised edges protect your screen. There’s no specific rating here for drop protection, so this likely isn’t the most protective case you can get. That said, it looks great and the leather should provide at least some cushion against any falls.

Pros

The best drop protection for your smartphone is to prevent you from dropping it in the first place, which is why Incipio’s Grip case focuses on making sure your Galaxy S23 Plus doesn’t slip out of your hands too easily. Rather than just a set of raised bumps on the sides, this case features multidirectional grips to ensure you can keep a hold on your S23 Plus in every direction.

However, the Incipio Grip doesn’t stop there. If your Galaxy S23 Plus does take a tumble, it features impact structs to provide up to 14 feet of drop protection, plus raised-edge bezels to protect the screen and camera. Plus, since the whole point of Grip is helping you keep a safe handle on your phone, it also offers antimicrobial technology to protect you from surface bacteria.

Samsung’s Rugged Gadget case is an innovative new modular case for the Galaxy S23 Plus. This one not only offers military-grade drop protection — and looks the part — but it also features an accessory attachment system that lets you gear it up for specific needs. This lets you choose whether you want to turn it into a wallet case to carry a couple of cards on the back, prop it up with a kickstand for watching videos, or even attach it to a compatible tripod or car mount.

While you’ll have to buy at least some of these accessories separately (Samsung hasn’t yet made it clear what comes in the box), it’s a versatile case that at least gives you options. Plus, in addition to the grippy sides, there’s a corner attachment to add a wrist strap or lanyard to make sure you can keep a hold of your phone during your outdoor adventures.

Pros

  • Stylish premium leather
  • Fully protective with magnetic closure and shock absorption
  • Can hold up to three cards and some cash

Torro’s premium leather wallet will protect your Galaxy S23 Plus in style, surrounding it with genuine cowhide leather that feels great in the hand and offers the kind of screen protection that you won’t get from a non-folio case.

Your S23 Plus also gets protection on the inside from a durable TPU frame, plus a leather strap with a magnetic clasp to keep it from flipping open and leaving your screen exposed. Inside that front flap you’ll also get space for up to three cards and another slot for a small amount of cash or some paper receipts.

Smartish Wallet Slayer

The best wallet Galaxy S23 Plus case

Pros

  • Good drop protection
  • Holds up to three cards and some cash
  • Available in fun colors and patterns

Digital wallets have eliminated the need to carry around a lot of payment cards, but we haven’t yet reached a point where you can leave your driver’s license or other ID behind. However, there’s definitely less of a reason to carry a bulky wallet around with you alongside your Galaxy S23 Plus, and if you only need to keep two or three cards on you, then Smartish’s Wallet Slayer is a great way to go.

Rather than going full folio-style, the Wallet Slayer has a slot on the back for up to three cards and a bit of cash, with a spring-loaded mechanism that holds everything safely in place while keeping your cards more accessible and less fiddly to get at than many other wallet cases. It’s also impact-resistant, tested to withstand drops of up to six feet. The only downside is that the card-holding mechanism means this case isn’t compatible with wireless charging, so you’ll have to remove the case to charge your Galaxy S23 Plus or go old-school and plug your phone in.

A durable pigskin leather on the inside provides scratch and impact protection, while a magnetic clasp will ensure that the front cover stays closed to protect your screen. The front flap also has room for three cards and some cash and converts into a stand to prop up your phone in landscape mode.

Speck Presidio2 Grip

The best soft-touch Galaxy S23 case

Pros

  • Comfortable yet grippy finish
  • Great drop protection in a slim design
  • Antimicrobial treatment keeps the case cleaner

Speck has a reputation for making great cases that balance solid protection with slim and lightweight designs that are comfortable to hold. The Presidio2 Grip continues this tradition with the ability to handle drops from up to 13 feet, which may surprise you, considering how unassuming it looks compared to other more rugged cases. Instead of relying on a hard polycarbonate shell, Speck has developed its own Armor Cloud technology that relies on air capsules to absorb impacts like an airbag would.

However, that drop protection is more of a backup since the no-slip grips on the sides and back help to ensure you’ll always have a solid hold on your smartphone, preventing you from dropping it in the first place. Despite this, it will still slide easily in and out of your pocket, and it’s remarkably comfortable to keep a grip on.

Samsung Galaxy S23 vs. Galaxy S23 Plus: a tough choice to make | Digital Trends

Joe Maring / Digital Trends

The decision isn’t always easy when looking for a new smartphone, especially when a manufacturer releases strikingly similar phones simultaneously. A case in point is Samsung, which released three top-tier Galaxy handsets earlier this year: the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus, and Galaxy S23 Ultra.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra is Samsung’s top-of-the-line handset and is in a league all its own. It’s a little more challenging to tell the difference between the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus. We will break down these two devices for you here so you can see which will better fit your needs.

Galaxy S23 vs. S23 Plus: design

A white Samsung Galaxy S23 next to a pink Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus.
Joe Maring / Digital Trends

The Samsung Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus are pretty much identical in design and look, and the entire lineup is already very similar to the Galaxy S22 series. The biggest difference between the S23 and S23 Plus compared to their predecessors is the camera layout. The curvature around the edges and frame is pretty much the same, and they both have flat displays.

But when it comes to the camera, the S23 and S23 Plus got rid of the camera island design from the previous generation. Instead, the camera lenses are both freely floating on the rear, much like on most other smartphones available today.

The colors for the S23 and S23 Plus are also the same. You get four beautiful, muted hues to choose from: Phantom Black, cream, green, or lavender. Unfortunately, if you’re hoping for a pink shade to return, you’re out of luck this year.

If you prefer smaller phones, the Galaxy S23’s smaller overall size will be more comfortable. But if you’re a large phone lover, the larger S23 Plus will be your cup of tea. Ultimately, this one is a draw.

Winner: Draw

Galaxy S23 vs. S23 Plus: display

Andrew Martonik / Digital Trends

The most obvious difference between the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus is the display. Both of them have the Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity-O FHD+ panel with 120Hz adaptive refresh rate, 1,750 nits peak outdoor brightness, and 19:5:9 aspect ratio — but it all comes down to the size.

The S23 only has a 6.1-inch display compared to the 6.6-inch screen of the S23 Plus. This also means that the base model S23 has 425 pixels per inch (ppi) versus the 393 ppi on the S23 Plus. By contrast, the newer Google Pixel 8 offers a 6.2-inch display, while the Google Pixel 8 Pro comes in at 6.7 inches.

While the displays on both of these are very similar, with only minor differences in resolution, it comes down to your preferences. Do you want a smaller, more compact size that is manageable with one hand, or do you want more information on the screen at once? You do lose some pixel density with the S23 Plus due to the size, but the difference is negligible. Again, the phones are all tied up.

Winner: Draw

Galaxy S23 vs. S23 Plus: performance and battery

A green Samsung Galaxy S23 next to a pink Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus.
Joe Maring / Digital Trends

Inside the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus, you’ll find Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chip, which powers Android 13 with Samsung’s One UI 5.1 interface layered on top. For clarity, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy is a specially optimized version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 designed for optimal performance with Galaxy devices. It’s also slightly faster than the regular version in other brands of Android smartphones thanks to faster clock speeds of up to 3.3 GHz.

RAM on both the S23 and S23 Plus starts at 8GB, which is about average. However, the base model S23 starts at 128GB storage and can go up to 256GB, whereas the S23 Plus starts at 256GB and can go up to 512GB.

In terms of battery, the S23 and S23 Plus have about 200mAh more than their predecessors. This puts the Galaxy S23 at 3,900mAh, whereas the Galaxy S23 Plus has 4,700mAh. But that’s not all! Though both are capable of fast charging, the S23 is capped out at 25 watts, while the S23 Plus can handle up to 45W charging speed. Both support fast wireless charging and reversible wireless charging too.

The regular Galaxy S23 isn’t a slouch in this department, but we have to give the edge to the Galaxy S23 Plus. With more storage, a larger battery, and faster charging, it’s the more powerful phone of the two — and the winner of this category.

Winner: Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus

Galaxy S23 vs. S23 Plus: cameras

Rear camera on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus.
Joe Maring / Digital Trends

The Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus are identical in terms of camera hardware and software capabilities. Both are equipped with a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilization (OIS) at f/1.8 aperture, a 12MP ultrawide at f/2.2 aperture, and a 10MP telephoto lens at f/2.4 aperture with OIS. Zoom capabilities are tied at 3x optical and 30x Space Zoom, and you can record 8K video at 30 frames per second (fps) or 4K at 60 fps, as well as FHD at 120 fps and 960 fps (super slo-mo).

The front-facing selfie cameras are also the same at 12MP and f/2.2 aperture with dual-pixel autofocus. Recording capabilities with the selfie camera are possible with 4K at 60 fps.

As far as camera features, you have access to Super HDR, Nightography, adaptive pixels, OIS, VDIS, auto framing, and director’s view.

Having as much storage as possible for all your photos/videos will be useful, and the S23 Plus has an advantage there. But looking only at the cameras, there’s no difference between the S23 and S23 Plus — making this a draw (again).

Winner: Draw

Galaxy S23 vs. S23 Plus: software and updates

Android 13 logo on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus.
Joe Maring / Digital Trends

The Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus ship with Android 13 and Samsung’s One UI 5.1 interface. Some new features with One UI 5.1 are the ability to use a video as your lock screen and a new widget system. And since they both use a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, you’re bound to have blazing-fast performance on either device.

Samsung typically has several years of support for software updates, and that applies to both the S23 and S23 Plus. You’ll get four years of major Android OS updates, which means the S23 and S23 Plus should be able to go up to Android 17. There will also be five years of security patches.

Samsung has also started rolling out its Android 14 update as of October 2023, and both the S23 and S23 Plus are set to receive the new software.

Winner: Draw

Galaxy S23 vs. S23 Plus: price and availability

Joe Maring holding a Samsung Galaxy S23 and a Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus.
Andrew Martonik / Digital Trends

Prices for the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus did not change from their predecessors, which is good. That means that the S23 starts at $799 for the 128GB version, and the S23 Plus starts at $999 for 256GB. However, that is U.S. pricing — Samsung did increase the prices in other countries, including Europe and Australia.

You can purchase both the S23 and S23 Plus from the Samsung Store, as well as carrier stores and retailers like Amazon and Best Buy. You could lower the price of either the S23 or S23 Plus by trading in an older device or be on the lookout for special deals.

Considering that the specs for the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus are almost identical aside from a few small differences, if you don’t mind a smaller form factor, you could save a nice chunk of change with the base S23.

Overall winner: draw

Samsung Galaxy S23 against green succulent backdrop
Christine Romero-Chan / Digital Trends

When it comes to picking a winner between the Samsung Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus, it’s pretty much impossible. The phones are virtually the same in terms of specs, with one having a slightly larger display and longer battery life. But looking at the bigger picture, the differences between the S23 and S23 Plus are negligible, and it all really comes down to your own preferences on phone size, storage, and battery.

However, if you want the absolute best, then neither of these phones is what you’re looking for — that’s where the Galaxy S23 Ultra comes in with the 6.8-inch display, 200MP main camera, up to 1TB of storage, a 5,000mAh battery, and more powerful features. Of course, all of that will cost a pretty penny, starting at $1,200.

Ultimately, you can’t go wrong with either phone. Want a compact device that won’t break the bank? The regular S23 is a great buy at $799. If you have extra cash to spend, want a larger screen, and need as much battery as possible, the $999 Galaxy S23 Plus is equally good.

The best Samsung Galaxy S23 cases: our 16 favorites right now | Digital Trends

The Samsung Galaxy S23 range has been with us a few months now, but that time has done little to tarnish its shine. In fact, the Galaxy S23 continues to be one of the best smartphones of 2023, along with its stablemates, the S23 Plus, and S23 Ultra.

It’s easy to see why it’s so desirable. The Samsung Galaxy S23 sports a 120Hz refresh rate, a top-quality camera suite, and the powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor providing power galore for games, heavy-duty apps, and processing. But despite all that, it’s not immune to bumps, scratches, and drops. Your phone arrived pristine and new, and the best Samsung Galaxy S23 cases will help to keep it that way.

Speck Presidio Perfect-Clear Case

Best clear Galaxy S23 case

Pros

  • Clear
  • Great drop protection
  • Microban anti-microbial coating

Cons

  • Slippery
  • Buttons are a little stiff to push

The Samsung Galaxy S23 is a great looking device, and not everyone is happy hiding such a good design behind some thick plastic. That’s where clear cases come in. Speck’s Presidio Perfect-Clear case is an expensive case, but it justifies that price with a big list of strengths. Unlike many clear cases, the Presidio Perfect-Clear is strong. Very strong, in fact — it packs 13 feet of drop protection in, as well as protection against chemicals and antenna interference. A stain-resistant Microban coating kills 99% of bacteria on your case, and it even has a raised bezel to keep your cameras and display safe from surfaces.

It has some downsides, unfortunately. It’s on the slippery side, which is annoying for a case, and the buttons can be a little stiff to push — but outside of those fairly minor issues, this is an excellent case with a lot to offer.

Crave Dual Guard Case

Best colorful Galaxy S23 case

Pros

  • Big variety of colors
  • Dual layer construction
  • Good shock protection
  • Adds plenty of grip

Cons

  • Design isn’t the most exciting, despite the number of colors

The Galaxy S23 comes in a variety of colors, and if you want to make sure your phone matches with its case, or with your own personal color theme, then check out Crave’s Dual Guard case. It comes in numerous styles — including Berry, Aqua, Forest Green, and more — so you’re sure to find a color you love.

You also get great protection regardless of the color you pick, thanks to the Dual Guard’s dual layer construction. Made from a TPU core under a PC shell, this combination of materials provides protection against drops and shocks, as well as scratches and dirt. The edges have good grip, and while the design is a little bit on the boring side, the compact design and colorful variants mean it’s definitely the right case for someone.

Caseology Parallax Case

Pros

  • Great, eye-catching design
  • Grippy edges and textured back panel
  • Raised edges and good protection

Cons

  • Only provides medium protection

Your phone spends a lot of time in your hands, so it should feel as good as it looks. Caseology’s Parallax case is a doughty veteran of the accessory market and a strong inclusion in this list.

The key feature is the 3D Hexa Cube design, which offers a great feel, as well as additional grip, which is further enhanced by the TPU edging all the way around the case. Raised bezels elevate your phone from potentially dirty surfaces, and the military-grade materials give you good protection against bumps and drops. It’s not going to be as protective as a proper rugged case, but as an everyday option that protects well and looks fantastic on a desk (and feels even better), this well-priced case is a good option.

Pros

  • Detachable wallet backpack has room for three credit cards
  • Strong protection
  • Supports all of the S23’s features

Wallet cases are amazing for allowing you to leave your wallet or purse behind and go off with just your phone. But a leather wallet case, while versatile, is often not quite as tough and rugged as a strong case. Ghostek has combined the two, and done it extremely well.

R7X protection means it’s strongly insulated against drops and bumps, has an anti-slip grip, and raised bezels to keep the display and camera lenses protected from surfaces. The backpack holds up to three credit cards, can be removed if it’s not needed, and magnets keep it secured in place when you do need it. It’s on the expensive side for sure, but with an offering of tough protection and a versatile wallet, the Ghostek Exec is a great Galaxy S23 case.

Best rugged wallet Galaxy S23 case

The Poetic case on a blank background.

Poetic Neon Rugged Case

Best eye-catching Galaxy S23 case

Pros

  • Interesting neon style
  • Strong protection
  • Great price

Cons

  • Design may not be for everyone

Poetic is known for its Guardian case, but it has great options outside of that, and the Neon is one of those. The more understated entry in Poetic’s roster, the Neon case is very much a quieter style from the other cases — but Poetic still couldn’t resist putting in the bold orange stripe along the edges.

It’s slim, but still has plenty of protection thanks to the dual-layer construction and thorough drop-testing. It has textured sides and panels for extra grip, and raised bezels are also present to help keep your phone from resting in dirt or grit. Best of all, the price is extremely reasonable, though you may find the design isn’t for you.

Scooch Wingman Case

Best versatile Galaxy S23 case

Pros

  • Versatile clickstand
  • Well protected
  • Clear design

Cons

  • Doesn’t work with wireless charging

There’s so much to do with your new Galaxy S23, so you need a case that supports as many of those uses as possible. Scooch’s Wingman case is there for you for a variety of needs.

Scooch’s unique Clickstand folds out when needed, and can be used to provide extra grip for your device, as a horizontal or vertical kickstand, or even as a car mount in a pinch. Just insert the Clickstand into an air vent, and it should hold your device in place. It’s an exceptional case, especially since it doesn’t skimp on protection, either. It’s well protected, with drop resistance of up to ten feet. And since it’s clear, it also allows you to show off your new Galaxy S23’s design.

Spigen Thin Fit Case

Best thin Galaxy S23 case

Pros

  • Thin design
  • Compatible with wireless charging
  • Comfortable polycarbonate material

Spigen’s Thin Fit case for the Galaxy S23 is perfect for those wanting to appreciate the phone’s sleek design while protecting it from scratches, chips, and breaks. While the Thin Fit may be a little less protective than other bulkier options, it more than makes up for it in comfort.

The polycarbonate material it’s made from gives your hand something solid to grip without being too rough in your pocket. Despite its thin design, the case also uses Spigen’s Air Cushion technology to help reduce the impact of drops, keeping your Galaxy S23 safe while also looking sleek.

Kate Spade New York Defensive Hardshell Case

Best stylish Galaxy S23 case

Pros

  • Stylish designs
  • 12-foot drop protection
  • Protective button coverings

Kate Spade is a brand synonymous with style, and its Galaxy S23 cases prove that. The Defensive Hardshell Case comes in three stylish designs that show off the beauty of the S23 with its clear coating while overlaying a nice, paint-like print design.

In addition to looking good, the case also offers 12-foot drop protection, making it a great choice for anyone looking to keep their phone safe from even the nastiest of drops thanks to the shock-absorbing, cushioned bumper that surrounds the edge of the case. Unfortunately, the case is listed at a high price, as is often the case when shopping for designer items.

Otterbox Defender Series Case

Best durable Galaxy S23 case

Pros

  • Excellent phone protection
  • Detachable clip holster
  • Reputable brand

Cons

  • Poor color options
  • Expensive

Otterbox is known for making high-quality, long-lasting cases that keep phones safe even after taking the hardest hits and highest falls. The Galaxy S23 Otterbox from the Defender Series is no exception and offers the same quality-assured protection that the company is known for.

In addition to the case, buyers get a detachable clip that allows them to secure their phone to a pocket or bag or simply use the clip as a makeshift stand for horizontal viewing. The S23 Otterbox is a little bit more expensive than other cases on this list. However, its durability and longevity can help justify the pricy buy-in cost.

Samsung S-View Wallet Case

Best wallet Galaxy S23 case

Pros

  • Wallet insert
  • Screen-protecting front flap with display window cutout
  • Solid color options

Now that phones have joined wallets and keys as one of the things most people won’t leave the house without, some feel that they’re beginning to feel overwhelmed by the number of things they have to keep track of in their pockets. Luckily, the Samsung S-View Wallet Case combines your wallet with your phone to reduce the number of things weighing your pockets down.

The S-View case comes with a screen-protecting front flap that has a display window cutout, meaning that if you’re glancing at your phone to check the time or see a notification, you won’t need to go through all the trouble of opening the flap and revealing your wallet. It’s a solid two-in-one accessory — but be warned: the S-View Wallet Case doesn’t provide any drop protection, so you’ll need to be more careful with your phone than if you picked up any of the other cases on this list.

Incipio Duo Case

Best dual-layer Galaxy S23 case

Pros

  • Two-piece protective case
  • Antimicrobial
  • Lifetime warranty

Incipio’s Duo cases are known for being solid picks for those looking for a non-bulky case that still offers great drop protection. The Duo for the Galaxy S23 offers drop protection of up to 12 feet, an impressive distance for a case so small, thanks to its two-piece design that’s meant to absorb as much shock as possible.

In addition to its protective qualities, the Duo case is made from recycled materials and is antimicrobial. That means you can bring your phone to your ear without worrying about what harmful, unseen microbes might be living on it. Unfortunately, the case is only offered in black, blue, and red. However, the Duo is a great pick if you’re looking for a minimalist case that still offers plenty of protection.

Samsung Clear Gadget Case

Best unique Galaxy S23 case

Pros

  • Multifunctional rear grip
  • See-through design
  • Official Samsung product
  • Works with other Samsung case accessories

Cons

  • No drop protection
  • Expensive despite lack of protective features

Grip accessories can make holding phones one-handed much more comfortable, and the Samsung Gadget Case is designed specifically with comfort, usability, and versatility in mind. The completely see-through case features a detachable, multifunctional rear grip that acts as grip support and as a kickstand for horizontal viewing that adds a level of comfort to using the Galaxy S23 that isn’t there on most other cases. Furthermore, you can pop off the rear grip and attach other official accessories (such as a miniature tripod).

While the comfort factor is top-notch, the case is lacking in a lot of the protection features that other cases on this list sport. Obviously, any case is going to help protect the back of your phone from scratches and chips; however, the Gadget Case doesn’t provide any sort of impact reduction for drops. That said, if you use the rear grip well, you may experience fewer drops in general.

The Nillkin Camshield case for the Galaxy S23.

Nillkin Camshield Bounce Case

Best protective Galaxy S23 case

Pros

  • Great camera protection
  • Strong grip
  • Dual-layer construction is durable

Cons

  • Doesn’t work with wireless charging

Even the most protective cases tend to leave the camera lenses exposed, which is a strange omission when you see how easy it’s been for Nillkin to close up that particular vulnerability. Nillkin’s Camshield case does exactly what the name suggests, with a specialized sliding cover for the camera that keeps your lenses safe from harm when you’re not actively taking pictures. A dual-layer build of TPU and PC means it’s protective against a range of hazards, and it has corner bumpers to protect it even further against drops and bumps.

It’s not perfect. The camera shield means quick shots are slower to take, so if you’re used to quickly pulling out your phone and snapping as fast as you can, you’ll need to get used to the shield being in the way. Also, it doesn’t work at all with wireless charging, which is a bother if you’re a fan.

The Ringke Onyx case on a blank background.

Ringke Onyx Anti-slip Case

Best grip Galaxy S23 case

Pros

  • Great grip
  • Great style and texture
  • Great price

Cons

  • Protection could be better

Ringke is a well-known and trusted name in the accessory business, so there’s no surprise it jumped on the Samsung Galaxy S23 very early. The Onyx is as close to a basic case as Ringke tends to get, and it doesn’t have the usual stand-out design we’ve come to expect. Regardless, it’s a great case with a relatively plain look, but one that feels amazing in the hand due to the sandstone-style texture. As such, it imparts fantastic levels of grip, and that’s helped by the flexible TPU material. That TPU also helps to bolster the case against bumps and drops, though it’s not likely to be much help against big bad drops in the way a more rugged case would be.

It has all of Ringke’s usual features, too — including the QuikCatch lanyard attachment point and raised edges for the camera and display, and it all comes at a very good price. This is a great choice if you loved OnePlus’s sandstone cases or love the idea of a lanyard attachment.

The Spidercase case for the Samsung Galaxy S23 on a blank background.

Spidercase Waterproof Case with Built-in Screen Protector

Best waterproof Galaxy S23 case

Pros

  • Waterproof
  • Rugged and protective
  • Allows access to all features

Cons

  • Adds some additional bulk

The Samsung Galaxy S23 has an IP68 water-resistance rating, but there’s no harm in doubling up on protection when there’s a flagship phone at stake. The Spidercase case offers a wide range of additional protection for your smartphone, making it a great choice for the more adventurous. It’s water, snow, and dustproof, and has some excellent protective qualities that make it shockproof as well. A shock-absorbing bumper keeps your device safe from bumps and drops, and the combo of the hard back plate and built-in screen protector gives you great all-around protection.

It doesn’t interfere with any of your features, including wireless charging, which is a big bonus. It’s slim for a rugged case, but it still adds a good amount of additional bulk to your device — especially around the edges. It’s also not stylish, though the clear back allows your phone’s design to shine through.

The Armor-X case for the Samsung Galaxy S23 on a blank background.

Armor-X MX-S Waterproof Case with Carabiner & X-Mount

Best rugged Galaxy S23 case

Pros

  • Very protective and rugged
  • Waterproof
  • Multiple mounting options

Armor-X specializes in offering some of the most versatile and protective cases on the market, and this case is no different. It’s fully waterproof, offers drop protection of up to 4 feet, and there’s built-in screen protection and port covers too. Armor-X’s range of mounting options backs up that all-around protection, and you can use the X-Mount to attach your phone to a belt clip, bike mount, and armband (purchased separately). There’s even a carabiner you can use if you want to attach your phone to a bag or strap.

It’s on the larger side where cases are concerned, though if you’re shopping for something this protective, you may not mind so much. It’s also extremely expensive, which is a much larger barrier to entry. But if you’re happy to invest (and invest further for the X-Mount system), this is an excellent rugged case.

The best Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra cases: top 20 you can buy | Digital Trends

Looking for the best of the best? Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra is in the running to be considered the baddest of the bunch, running right up against the iPhone 14 Pro as the best smartphone overall, and being unquestionably the best Android smartphone available today.

It’s not alone in being excellent — the rest of the Samsung Galaxy S23 series is similarly amazing, but the big and powerful Galaxy S23 Ultra is the most expensive of the three. It starts at $1,200 retail, but it’s a solid investment considering that it could easily be the only smartphone you’ll need for years to come — it delivers performance like nothing we’ve ever seen before, and you’re guaranteed updates through Android 17.

But all that only applies if it can physically go the distance and isn’t wrecked by a tumble onto concrete or other solid ground. The best Galaxy S23 Ultra cases can help stop that from happening, and we’ve rounded up the best picks below to offer something for everyone.

The ringke Fusion-X case on a blank background.

Ringke Fusion-X Case

Best lanyard case for the Galaxy S23 Ultra

Pros

  • Great value
  • Unique look
  • Strong protection

Cons

  • Style may not be for everyone

Want a case with a design you’re unlikely to find anywhere else? Ringke’s Fusion-X is a classic of the accessory world, with a unique style that doesn’t skimp on protection. It’s a dual-layer case, meaning it uses two materials in its build, giving it the strength of a soft, absorbent TPU frame alongside a rigid, scratch-resistant polycarbonate backplate. This combo means it protects equally well against drops, bumps, scratches, and dirt. The slim build also means it also won’t block wireless charging and can be used with a screen protector.

Ringke’s real magic, though? You’ll find that in the bottom corners of the case — a pair of QuikCatch lanyard attachment points. These points are compatible with any form of lanyard (from wrist straps to shoulder straps) and mean you can be sure of drop-proofing your smartphone. While lanyards can be cumbersome when shoved into pockets, if you’re using your phone to take lots of pictures, the added security of a lanyard is very much appreciated.

The UAG Monarch Kevlar case on a blank background.

UAG Monarch Kevlar Case

Best kevlar case for the Galaxy S23 Ultra

Pros

  • Excellent all-around protection
  • Cool sci-fi design
  • Lightweight

Urban Armor Gear may have a grandiose name, but it holds up to scrutiny when it produces cases like this. The UAG Monarch Kevlar includes a lot of what makes UAG’s cases excellent, like the five layers of protective materials, paired with a lightweight build that doesn’t weigh down your phone and doesn’t add extra bulk. But the key to this particular case is the addition of industry-leading DuPont Kevlar Material. It’s tested up to an impressive 20 feet for drop protection, and it meets military standards for protection as a result. Despite all that protection, it doesn’t block wireless charging, and the raised bezels mean your phone won’t rest directly on surfaces.

The downside? The price. UAG is a premium seller, and this is an ultra-premium case. The high price is for a truly quality product, and it reflects the similar status of your smartphone.

Ghostek Nautical Case

Best adventure case for the Galaxy S23 Ultra

Pros

  • Protection for the most adventurous
  • Drop protection up to 12 feet
  • Built in screen protection

Cons

  • On the more expensive side

Ghostek’s Nautical case started as Ghostek’s most comprehensive waterproof case, but it’s evolved into so much more than that. If you’re the adventurous sort, then Ghostek’s Nautical case is the case for you.

It completely seals your S23 Ultra away, protecting against water, dirt, dust, snow, sand, and shocks and drops too. As such, it’s as home in six feet of water as it is on top of a mountain, and the built-in screen protector also keeps dirt, dust, and scratches away from your display too. It’s on the more expensive side for sure, but it also offers 12 feet of drop protection and a clear design that doesn’t overly distract from your beautiful Galaxy S23 Ultra. A great all-around adventure case for those who love a life spent outdoors.

The Otterbox Defender for the Galaxy S23 Ultra on a blank background.

OtterBox Defender Series Case

Best belt clip case for the Galaxy S23 Ultra

Pros

  • Great OtterBox protection
  • Versatile accessories
  • Kickstand

You can’t get a much more prestigious case maker than OtterBox, and the Defender Series is one of its most notable covers. It’s a multi-layer case, being made from a rubber slipcover, a polycarbonate shell, and a polycarbonate holster as a final, optional extra. The holster includes a belt clip that also doubles as a kickstand, giving it some extra versatility. It’s extremely drop-safe, having been tested up to four times as many drops as needed for military standards, and it has some decent eco-standards, too, as it’s made of 50% recycled material.

The only real downside is the cost. But, if you’re happy to keep an eye out for sales, you can often grab this case at a good discount, as OtterBox is one of the bigger names around and a real deal magnet.

Tech21 Evo Sparkle Case

Best sparkly case for the Galaxy S23 Ultra

Pros

  • Stylish
  • Lightweight and clear
  • Excellent protection

Cons

  • Expensive for a simple case

Most cases commit a smartphone sin — they cover up your smartphone’s gorgeous design. Not so with Tech21’s Evo Sparkle. The clear material means your S23 Ultra can shine through, while the addition of the sparkly lines adds some extra flair to set off your phone’s look and mark it as your own. The Evo Sparkle isn’t all beauty and no brawn, too. The TPU and FlexShock blend offers 12 feet of drop protection and scratch protection and also has anti-yellowing to stop the case from yellowing as it ages.

It’s expensive for a relatively simple case, though. This price often gets you a case with far more rugged protection or a case with more versatility, like a wallet case, and it’s a lot for what is essentially a style case. However, it does have some impressive protective qualities for a style-focused case, so we’re happy to say the money is worthwhile.

  • Flexible yet robust protection

Cons

  • Available in a single, black color

Those who want something that is minimalistic while still getting decent protection should consider this simple case from ErHu. It is made with a flexible PC and TPU material, so it’s easy to get it on and off, and it has hardened PC materials in the corners for shock absorption. If you’re worried about butterfingers with your new device, the textured, grippy back should help you keep your Galaxy S23 Ultra in your hands and not on the floor. The sliding camera cover also keeps the triple-lens camera system safe from small particles and debris when not in use.

So if you plan to take the S23 Ultra to the pool, or even snorkeling or surfing, this case will keep it nice and dry, especially with the built-in screen and camera lens protectors. They’re made with tempered glass with 99.99% response sensitivity, it never scratches, and the camera lens protectors are crystal clear — giving you pristine photos and video.

Best wallet case for Galaxy S23 Ultra

Pros

  • Rugged, shockproof protection
  • Hidden compartment holds up to four cards
  • Precise cutouts for all ports and S-Pen
  • Responsive and tactile buttons
  • Affordable price and multiple colors

Love the convenience of having your phone and wallet in one? Then this affordable case is worth a look. Marphe’s Wallet Case offers durable protection with a dual-layer polycarbonate defender shell and a soft TPU bumper, so drops and bumps will not harm your device. On the back, a hidden flip-slot compartment can hold up to four cards, such as your debit and credit cards, folded receipts, and ID. The precise cutouts make accessing the ports easy, and the buttons remain tactile and responsive through the covers.

The only negative is that there is no wireless charging compatibility due to the fact that the card compartment interferes with it. But this wallet case comes in three colors and costs less than a Jackson, so it’s a fine compromise considering everything else the case has to offer.

Those who are prone to dropping their phone a lot, or those who work in extreme environments will want to consider a rugged, protective case. This option from Amilifecases is a good option to consider for several reasons.

With the Amilifecases Case, it has military-grade drop protection to keep your Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra safe, no matter how many times or how high you drop it from. The case also has a toughened glass screen protector to keep the front of the screen protected, and there is also a tempered glass camera lens protector as well. An integrated kickstand can be found on the back that also doubles as a phone grip. However, because of the built-in kickstand, wireless charging will not work — the case must be removed if you want to wirelessly charge the Galaxy S23 Ultra, or use the Wireless PowerShare feature.

Still, if you need rugged protection, this case is a solid choice, and it won’t break the bank. It also comes in a variety of fun colors.

ESR Classic Kickstand Case

Best kickstand case for Galaxy S23 Ultra

Pros

  • Integrated kickstand doubles as camera guard
  • Military-grade drop protection
  • Unique frosted back

Cons

  • Sides are a bit too smooth

While kickstand cases are a handy way to prop up your smartphone for watching videos, most of them add bulk by placing the kickstand right in the center of the case. However, ESR has taken a unique approach to this problem by turning the kickstand into a cover that protects the expansive camera array on your Galaxy S23 Ultra when it’s folded up.

It’s an ideal blend of form and function. It lets you prop your phone up in either landscape or portrait orientations at various angles for hands-free viewing of your favorite shows or participating in video calls. The case also provides military-grade drop protection, and the kickstand frame uses a durable zinc alloy and hinge. That means it’s easy to open, won’t damage your camera when closed, and you won’t need to worry about wearing it out over time.
