How to reset default apps on an Android phone or tablet | Digital Trends

How to reset default apps on an Android phone or tablet | Digital Trends

One of the best things about owning an Android phone is being able to change your default apps. If you’ve ever opened a file or an internet link with a certain app, and you chose Always when prompted, then that type of file will be opened with that app every time, saving you from tapping that app every time, and reclaiming some precious time. But what happens if you’re the indecisive type or if you suddenly find a better app you’d like to use as your default? It’s easy enough to go change.

Stock Android

“Stock Android” refers to any basic Android device that is similar to Google’s version. If you’re the owner of a phone running Stock Android — like the Google Pixel 5, the Xiaomi Mi A3, or the Motorola One Vision, here’s how to reset your app preferences.

Resetting preferences for a single app

  1. Search for Settings in the App Drawer.
  2. Once there, select Apps and Notifications > See All Apps and choose the app you want to reset.
  3. Once selected, go to Advanced then tap Open By Default.
  4. Tap Clear Defaults.

Reset all app preferences at once

  1. Go to Settings > Apps.
  2. Tap the More menu () in the upper-right corner.
  3. Select Reset App Preferences.

Read through the warning — it will tell you everything that will be reset. Then, tap Reset Apps to confirm your decision.

Samsung smartphones

You’ll need to follow different steps to make the same changes on a Samsung device because they have their own layout to find certain changes. For those with a Samsung phone, these are the steps you need to follow to reset your app preferences.

Resetting preferences for a single app

  1. Go to Settings > Apps and tap the three dots in the top right corner.
  2. From the pop-up menu, tap Default Apps.
  3. Choose the app you want to reset.
  4. Select the alternative app you’d like to use.

Reset all app preferences at once

  1. Go to Settings > Apps.
  2. Tap the three dots in the upper-right corner.
  3. Select Reset App Preferences.
  4. Read through the warning — it will tell you everything that will be reset. This usually includes disabled apps, notification restrictions for apps, background data restrictions for apps, and permission restrictions, as well as default apps.
  5. Tap Reset Apps to confirm your decision.

When you make changes to your settings using these steps, you’ll restore everything to defaults, so any app you’d previously disabled will have to be manually disabled when you complete the process.

Have one of these Motorola phones? You’re getting a big update | Digital Trends

Have one of these Motorola phones? You’re getting a big update | Digital Trends

Joe Maring / Digital Trends

If you bought a Motorola phone within the last couple of years, you’ll want to keep your eyes out for a big Android update coming your way. Why? Motorola recently updated its support website, confirming which of its phones are getting Android 14, and it’s a big list.

The folks at YTECHB went through the (somewhat complicated) support page and made a full list of all the Motorola phones slated to get Android 14. There are well over 20 phones, including ones sold in the U.S. and models Motorola sells in other markets.

Focusing on the U.S. Motorola phones getting Android 14 and starting with the Moto G series, the following Moto G handsets are confirmed to receive an Android 14 update:

  • Moto G Stylus 5G (2023)
  • Moto G Stylus (2023)
  • Moto G Power 5G (2023)
  • Moto G 5G (2023)
  • Moto G Play (2023)

Looking at Motorola’s Edge phones, the Motorola Edge (2023) and Motorola Edge Plus (2023) are — unsurprisingly — getting Android 14. If you have the older Motorola Edge (2022) or Motorola Edge Plus (2022), you’re getting an Android 14 update, too. The wonderfully named Motorola Edge Plus 5G UW also has an Android 14 update headed its way.

What about Motorola Razr phones? The two Razr handsets released last year — the Motorola Razr Plus and Motorola Razr (2023) — will be updated to Android 14. And if you picked up the Lenovo ThinkPhone, you’re getting Android 14 as well.

That’s a healthy list of Motorola phones confirmed for an Android 14 update, which is great to see. However, there’s one big piece missing from this puzzle: timing. Motorola hasn’t indicated when Android 14 is coming to any of these phones, and if previous Android updates are anything to go by, you could be waiting a while before you actually get Android 14 on any of these Motorola phones.

Regardless, it’s good to have confirmation from Motorola that Android 14 is — finally — in the works.

Motorola’s latest Razr foldable phone is discounted to $500 | Digital Trends

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

If you want to get a foldable phone but Samsung’s Galaxy Z devices are too expensive, you may want to turn your attention towards the Motorola Razr 2023. From an original price of $700, it’s currently available from Amazon with a $200 discount, so you’ll only have to pay $500. There’s no telling when the offer expires though, so you’re going to have to make a quick decision on whether you’re buying this if you want to pocket the savings from one of the most interesting phone deals we’ve come across recently.

Why you should buy the Motorola Razr 2023

The Motorola Razr 2023 is featured in our list of the best Android phones as the best cheap foldable Android phone. For a much cheaper price than the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, you’ll get a folding smartphone with a 1.5-inch OLED cover screen that shows notifications and allows you to take a selfie with its 64MP external camera without having to open the device, and a 6.9-inch pOLED inner screen with a 144Hz refresh rate that looks absolutely fantastic. The 32MP internal camera features Quad Pixel technology that allows it to capture more details when you take photos with it.

The 4,200 mAh battery of the Motorola Razr 2023 will last you the whole day, but if it gets depleted, the smartphone  will recharge quickly with TurboPower 30W charging or wireless charging. The smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 processor and 8GB of RAM, it offers 128GB of storage, and it ships with Android 13 pre-installed while waiting for an Android 14 update.

The Motorola Razr 2023, a foldable phone with amazing style and fantastic performance, is on sale from Amazon for only $500, for savings of $200 on its sticker price of $700. It’s probably not going to stay this cheap for long though, as we expect this bargain to attract a lot of attention from shoppers. If you think the Motorola Razr 2023 should be your next smartphone, there’s no way to secure the discount other than proceeding with the purchase as soon as possible, because the device’s price may be back to normal as soon as tomorrow.

How to Find Your Phone Number on iPhone or Android | Digital Trends

How to Find Your Phone Number on iPhone or Android | Digital Trends

If you’re here, you’ve likely just had this experience; needing to enter your digits for an account of some sort, you realize you don’t remember your own phone number. As you don’t call your own phone number very often, this isn’t an extremely uncommon scenario. And it gets even worse if you frequently use a second phone number alongside your main one. It’s still embarrassing enough, however, to not want to ask your partner or buddy, “Hey, what’s my phone number?”

Luckily, the ability to locate phone number data comes directly on your phone, so checking your friend’s address book won’t be necessary. Whether you’re using an iOS or Android device, you can quickly locate your own number — as well as your IMEI number — on your phone if you know where to look. Just grab your phone, find the appropriate section below, and we’ll show you how to do it.

How to find your phone number on iPhone

Looking up your phone number on an iOS device is easy and convenient because most iOS users are running the same version. There are two ways you can easily locate your phone number: The Contacts app or in the settings.

  • Contacts: Open the Phone app, tap Contacts, and your number will be the first listed.
  • Settings: Go to Settings > Phone and My Number will be the first field on the list. You can of course change, or edit, this if you wish by tapping on the number.

How to find your phone number on Android

Do not be surprised to discover some variations in the steps you need to take for finding your own mobile number on an Android device. That’s because Android users may be running different versions of the operating system and because of variations in how the operating system is implemented across device brands. So there are bound to be different interfaces depending on which device you use and which version of the OS you run. Generally, however, all roads begin from the settings.

The example below is on an LG V40 ThinQ running Android 10, but the process remains the same in Android 11, Android 12, and Android 13.

  • Go to settings and search for My phone number in the search bar.
  • The result will give you the path: System > About phone > Status.
  • Alternately, launch the Contacts app and you’ll see your own contact info right at the top.

The screenshots below show an older Samsung Galaxy S6 that runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

If you’re running stock Android, or something very close — for example, the Google Pixel or Nexus, or the Lenovo Moto G, X, or Z smartphones — pull up the Contacts app. You’ll see an entry titled My Info or Me; your phone number is listed in that contact information at the top of the list.

For every Android phone, regardless of manufacturer, you’ll be able to find your phone number if you go to Settings > About Phone or About Device > Status > My phone number. Some Android phones will have SIM or SIM card status listed within Status. For example, you may need it for verification at some casinos, at wolf winner casino this procedure is particularly important. If this is the case with your phone, then your number will be listed there. If you don’t want to go through these many different menus, you can pull up the search bar and type in My Phone Number to directly pull up the relevant information.

Note: If your SIM card is faulty or installed incorrectly, you may see a “Phone number not found” warning as you try to complete this process.

It’s not hard to find your phone number once you know how to look for it, so you can help others find their numbers with just a few steps.

Getting a call from your own number?

Now that you’ve found or memorized your phone number, it might come as a shock to see if pop-up on your screen as an incoming call. The FTC has warned that some robocallers and scammers have taken number spoofing to the next level and will use your own number in hopes you answer. They have also taken to this method to get around number block, because after all, who blocks their own number? If you see an incoming call with your number on it, no it’s not you from an alternate timeline, it’s a scam so don’t pick up.

Google Pixel Watch 2 just got its first proper discount | Digital Trends

Google Pixel Watch 2 just got its first proper discount | Digital Trends

Joe Maring / Digital Trends

If you’re on the hunt for smartwatch deals, here’s an offer that you should definitely consider — the Google Pixel Watch 2 for $300, down from $350 at Best Buy We think there’s a lot of shoppers who have been waiting for the wearable device’s first proper discount since its October 2023 release, so if you want to pocket the $50 in savings, you’re going to have to be quick with your purchase.

Why you should buy the Google Pixel Watch 2

The Google Pixel Watch 2, Google’s follow-up to the Google Pixel Watch, lets you access your favorite Google apps like Google Maps and Google Calendar on your wrist, on a 1.2-inch screen with a 320 pixel-per-inch density and a maximum brightness of 1,000 nits. It comes with Fitbit as its fitness platform, and emergency features such as fall detection and real-time location sharing. The Google Pixel Watch 2 just received an update to enable notifications to your Android phone when it’s fully charged, which is a sign that owners can look forward to more additions in the future.

Between the Google Pixel Watch 2 and Google Pixel Watch, we recommend going for the second generation of the smartwatch despite no visible changes between the two models. That’s because the improvements are mostly under the hood, with a processor upgrade to the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 for faster performance and better battery efficiency, an entire ensemble of new and improved sensors for fitness tracking, and Google’s Wear OS 4 pre-installed.

The Google Pixel Watch is just nearly two months old, but you can already get this new piece of tech with a $50 discount from Amazon, Best Buy, or Target. It’s down to its lowest price so far of $300 from $350, but probably not for long as we expect a lot of demand for the smartwatch. There’s a chance that stocks are already running low, so if you’re already looking forward to wearing the Google Pixel Watch 2 on your wrist, there’s no time to waste — lock the price in as soon as possible.

Google Pixel Fold just got a huge price cut for Black Friday | Digital Trends

Andy Boxall / Digital Trends

The Google Pixel Fold, which was just released in June, is surprisingly already part of this year’s Black Friday phone deals. Best Buy has slashed the price of the unlocked, 256GB version of the foldable smartphone to $1,399, for savings of $400 on its original price of $1,799. That’s a tremendous bargain for a flagship device — and a lot of shoppers are probably thinking the same way. If you want to take advantage of this offer, you should be proceeding with your purchase right now as stocks may already be running low.

Why you should buy the Google Pixel Fold

Amid the growing popularity of foldable smartphones, we tagged the Google Pixel Fold in our roundup of the best folding phones because it’s a powerful device that offers a clean stock Android 13 experience. It features solid build quality, a 7.6-inch inner OLED display, and a 5.8-inch OLED cover display that’s wider than the cover screens of some of its peers, with both displays having a 120Hz refresh rate. For cameras, it has an impressive lineup that includes a 48MP main camera, a 10.8MP ultrawide camera, and a 10.8MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom at the back, a 9.5MP selfie camera on the cover display, and an 8MP selfie camera on the inner display.

In terms of performance, the Google Pixel Fold is smooth and powerful with Google’s Tensor G2 chip and 12GB of RAM, so you won’t run into any slowdowns when you’re multitasking between several apps. The foldable smartphone promises all-day battery life, but if you activate Extreme Battery Saver mode, it can last up to 72 hours before requiring a recharge.

Don’t Miss:

Best Buy is offering one of the most attractive Google Pixel Black Friday deals still available — the unlocked Google Pixel Fold with 256GB of storage at $400 off, bringing its price down to $1,399 from $1,799. There’s a chance that the bargain doesn’t make it to the shopping holiday itself though, as it’s one of those Black Friday deals that you’re sure will draw a lot of attention. You’re going to have to finalize your purchase of the Google Pixel Fold as soon as possible if you don’t want to miss out on the savings.

The Samsung Galaxy S22+ is down to $439 at Walmart | Digital Trends

The Samsung Galaxy S22+ is down to $439 at Walmart | Digital Trends

Andy Boxall/Digital Trends / Digital Trends

With the release of the Samsung Galaxy S23 series of smartphones earlier this year, shoppers have been waiting for the Samsung Galaxy S22 series to appear in phone deals with huge discounts. If you’ve had an eye on the Samsung Galaxy S22+, don’t miss this chance to get an unlocked 128GB version for just $439 following a $369 discount from Walmart on its sticker price of $808. We’re not sure how much time remains on this bargain, but you should hurry with your purchase because we think stocks will sell out quickly.

Why you should buy the Samsung Galaxy S22+

The Samsung Galaxy S22+, the predecessor of the Samsung Galaxy S23+, offers smooth performance even when you’re multitasking between apps with its Qualcomm SM8450 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor and 8GB of RAM. The smartphone is equipped with an impressive camera system composed of a 50MP wide, 12MP ultrawide, and 10MP telephoto at the back, and a 10MP selfie camera at the front. The Samsung Galaxy S22+ also comes with an IP68 rating for water resistance, and Android 13 with Samsung’s OneUI 5 out of the box.

Between the smartphones in the same series — the Samsung Galaxy S22, Samsung Galaxy S22+, and Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra — the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is the outlier as it follows the footsteps of the now-defunct Galaxy Note line. The Samsung Galaxy S22+ is simply a larger version of the Samsung Galaxy S22 with a 6.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen, and it comes with a bigger 4,500 mAh battery. It’s the one that you want to buy if the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is beyond your budget.

The Samsung Galaxy S22+ isn’t among the brand’s latest flagship smartphones, but it remains a highly capable device with impressive performance and features. If you want it, you can get it for nearly half its original price of $808 from Walmart, with the unlocked 128GB version going for only $439. We don’t think the savings of $369 will stay available for a long time though, so if you’re already looking forward to the Samsung Galaxy S22+ as your next phone, you’re going to want to complete the transaction as soon as possible.

Galaxy Z Flip 5 leak just revealed all of its biggest specs | Digital Trends

Galaxy Z Flip 5 leak just revealed all of its biggest specs | Digital Trends

OnLeaks, MediaPeanut

So far, we’ve only heard a handful of rumors regarding the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 5, but a recent leak revealed nearly everything about the foldable’s specs, launch window, and price.

According to a tweet from reputable leaker Yogesh Brar, we should be expecting the Flip 5 to launch at the end of next month on July 26 or 27 and cost $999, just like the Galaxy Z Flip 4 before it. In terms of the specs themselves, Samsung isn’t making any huge leaps from what we’re expecting the company to bring out for the Flip and Fold 5, although there are still plenty of upgrades if the leak is accurate.

One of the biggest differences between the Flip 4 and Flip 5 is the chipset that each foldable runs on. The Flip 5 will be outfitted with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, just like we saw with the Galaxy S23 series earlier this year.

Other specs revealed in the leak include that the Z Flip 5 will offer 8GB of RAM as well as 128 and 256GB storage options (no surprises there.) It’ll have a 3,700mAh battery and support 25W charging. The leak doesn’t say specifically if it’ll support wireless charging; however, since the Flip 4 did, it’s safe to assume that the Flip 5 will keep the feature. Additionally, the phone will run on Android 13 at launch with OneUI 5.1.

Leaked render of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5.
OnLeaks, MediaPeanut

There has been a lot of speculation regarding the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s screens — ever since rumors started to spread that the outer screen would be much bigger than the one on the Flip 4. For the Z Flip 5, Brar says that the outer screen will be a 3.4-inch HD AMOLED panel but doesn’t mention how it will be shaped around the two cameras. Based on previous leaks and rumors, it appears the outer display won’t cut into the cameras, as we recently saw on the Motorola Razr Plus.

When unfolded, the main display will be a 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED screen with a 120hz refresh rate, exactly the same as the one found on the Z Flip 4.
